Death Date: February 10, 2019

Catherine B. Shackleford of North Fort Myers, Florida passed away peacefully while under Hospice care on Sunday, February 10, 2019 following some recent health challenges.  She was 90 years old.

Catherine was born in Limona, Florida on October 30, 1928, the beautiful daughter of Ruby (Crossley) and Taylor Shackleford.  She worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation for several years early in her career with postings in both Miami and Washington, D.C. before she transferred to the White House to work in public relations.  She served as a staff member for the correspondence section under seven different American Presidents, beginning with Dwight D. Eisenhower until her retirement under Ronald Reagan.  She truly enjoyed her life of public service and was proud to work for our nation during some very interesting times.

Catherine leaves to cherish her memory her nephews James R. Hinman (Jill) and William Hinman and great nephew Joel Hinman (Stacy).  She also leaves behind a number of extended family members and countless others she met along life’s travels who were proud to call her a friend.  Sadly, she was predeceased by her parents; sister Ann Hinman and nephew Charles Hinman.  Catherine will be warmly remembered and fondly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Memorial Service for Catherine will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 22, 2019 inside the Chapel at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2439 McGregor Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida 33901, (239) 334-8937.  The Reverend Dr. Jeffrey DeYoe will be officiating the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions in memory of Catherine be directed to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, Florida 33908, (239) 482-4673.

    Dear “Aunt” Cathy,

Thank you for being such a wonderful friend to mom. Mom’s memory is gone but I know she cherished your life long friendship growing up together in Homestead and continuing into your adult years. God bless your family and I know you and mom will be reunited together in heaven.

  2. Partnered at bridge games

    Written by: Millie Mitchell

I partnered with Catherine for 9 years at several bridge clubs. We enjoyed the game together. She was so kind and friendly and generous. After she no longer played bridge we had lunched at First Watch many times. She is fondly remembered.

  3. Thank you Marilyn. Catherine spoke often of both you and your Mother. She treasured your friendship.
    Jill Hinman, niece-in-law

  4. Sorry for your loss. I have known Catherine for years. She was a true lady. Generous and kind. She will be missed.
