Helmut Reinhold Wersel of Cape Coral, Florida passed away peacefully at Cape Coral Hospital with his loving family by his side on Thursday, August 9, 2018. He was 85 years old.
Mr. Wersel was born on July 7, 1933 in Goetzendorf, East Prussia, the second child of proud parents Charlotte (nee Gloede) and Otto Wersel. During the war the family fled to Roehrse West Germany, he was the man of the family at age 11, his father was drafted as a soldier. At age 21 he immigrated to America with a trade and best wishes from his parents and siblings. Landing in New York, he struggled to find work as a mason. Learning to navigate around the unfamiliar landscape of the big city of English speakers was a true test. After some time, he traveled West to live in Oshkosh, WI nearer to his sponsoring family.
He soon met his beloved wife Gabriella (Gommermann) and the couple settled in the Milwaukee, WI developing their life plan, which took a little side trip into the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany as a natural fit, where he and his wife started their family. Mr. Wersel joined the Bricklayers Union, Local No. 8 as a bricklayer and mason before advancing into working as a project supervisor. He was very hardworking and enjoyed knowing that he helped to build many of the landmarks in and around Milwaukee. Mr. Wersel enjoyed bowling, playing and watching soccer, card parties, and special occasions. He and his wife loved to host visitors in their home in Florida. He was a longstanding member of the Musci Familien Club in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin before retiring to Southwest Florida with his wife in 1996, first as a snowbird and later as a full-time resident.
He was preceded in death by his sister Ellinore Grabs and brothers Wolfgang and Manfred.
Left to cherish his loving memory is his wife of over 60 years Gabriella; his children Shirley (nee Wersel) Gutkowski (Mark Gutkowski) of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Raymond Wersel of Brookfield, Wisconsin and Eric Wersel (Barbara nee Entringer) of Spanish Fort, Alabama; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. He was also very close with the spouses of his siblings and wife as well as their children. He also leaves behind a number of extended family members, a great many friends. and countless others he impacted along life’s journey. He will be greatly missed.
