Shirley R. Olson
Birth Date: January 22, 1926Death Date: October 9, 2017
Shirley R. Olson, 91, of Fort Myers, passed away Monday, October 9, 2017 to be reunited with the love of her life, Mr. Raymond Olson. She was born January 22, 1926 in Patterson, Louisiana and after graduating high school completed a program in Business Administration and Accounting in Alexandria, LA. Her skills were so highly recognized that her completion of the program was expedited to allow her to begin as an officer’s secretary at a local military installation.
Not long after beginning this position, she met and married her first husband, Mr. Harold Pontiff, a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. Her 5 children agree that she was the constant anchor and stabilizing influence for the family during the frequent and challenging redeployments in the years that followed. Among these were stays in Hawaii, Mexico, Tennessee, Maryland, and Florida.
For an extended period during which she was the sole provider for the family, her exceptional organizational and accounting skills enabled her to work at times up to 3 jobs to keep things going. Around 1970 she met and married her true life partner and soulmate, Ray Olson. Together they explored and enjoyed life to its fullest with travel, card games (she was formidable at Bridge and Canasta), cooking (a master of Cajun cuisine and the best potato salad ever), multiple sewing crafts and most of all – being a welcoming true friend to many.
But this wasn’t all. She had numerous other interests including: flowers, NASCAR, a loyalty to both the Globe Magazine and the National Enquirer, but most significantly her beloved (breed?) Bubba .
Shirley is survived by her 5 children: Harold Jr (Connie Diercks), children Morgan (Ashley) & Kira; Kathy Best (Lee), children Jimmy Jr (Tracy) children William & Lillie Grace; Jeff (Cindy), Michelette Keeler (Keith – deceased), daughter Christina (Stephen), children Haley & Aubrey; Kevin Pontiff (Tia), son Greg (Cheri ) children Samantha, Amanda & Caitlin); Joseph Pontiff (Kimm), children Nick and Kody,
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33907, 239-936-0555.
