Janet C Downes

Janet C Downes, 89, of Cape Coral, FL passed away March 7, 2022 holding hands with her husband, Bernie Downes, of 69 years. Janet was born on July 20, 1932 to Edgar and Frances (Graves) Callahan in South Gardiner, Maine. She graduated from Boothbay High School in 1950. Janet married Bernie on August 16, 1952 and started a family. Janet was a devoted mother and homemaker. She especially enjoyed flower gardening. As her children got older, she worked as a volunteer at Prey Street school and Gardiner Area High School as a librarian and kitchen helper. Janet went on to work at Cottle’s in Gardiner as a cashier and front end manager before moving to Hampton NH. In New Hampshire she continued working for Hannaford’s in North Hampton as the front end manager. Janet is predeceased by her father and mother and her sister Frances Estabrook and her husband Gerald. She is survived by her husband Bernie, her daughter Lianne Hansen of Tacoma Washington; her son Stephen Downes and his wife Janet of Monmouth Maine and Rockledge Florida; her son David Downes and his wife Erin of Cape Coral Florida. She is survived by five grandchildren; Nathaniel Downes and his wife Tiffany; Stephanie Downes; Ryan Downes and his wife Nicole; Colby Downes and James Downes and his wife Kelsea. She survived by five great grandchildren; Gregory Downes; Samuel Spencer; Sophia Spencer; Aiden Downes and Aaron Downes. Services and burial in Maine have yet to be finalized.
