Roberta N McGovern

Roberta N. McGovern, 79, a resident of Fort Myers, FL, passed away Friday, February 25, 2022 under the care of Hope Hospice. She was born February 5, 1943 in Somerville, MA, to the late Robert and Laura (Jean Garland) Mortali. Roberta was a graduate of the Melrose Wakefield School of Nursing and completed her resident training in the Boston area including work at the Boston Children’s Hospital. Upon graduation she became a registered nurse and worked at Lowell General Hospital and Malden Hospital. In 1979 she relocated with her husband and children to Marco Island, Fl. Roberta continued her work as a nurse, assisting patients in the emergency room and trauma center at Naples Community Hospital While at Naples Community Hospital, she received advanced training in this specialty field of nursing. Roberta was the recipient of numerous employee awards and citations for her work in this department and was a dedicated employee for 25 years until semi-retirement. In 2006, to Ocala, FL, where she spent her later years until her husband’s passing in 2020. Roberta was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting, cross-stitching,solving c crossword puzzless, thrifting at garage sales on weekends. She and her husband were avid fans of 50’s music, and the two enjoyed traveling to listen to 50s’music and tribute bands throughout Florida. Roberta greatly enjoyed creative writing, and was proud to have two of her many short stories published. He story “The Earrings” was included in Chicken Soup for the Shopper’s Soul (2006), and her piece “The Pink Slippers” was published in The Ultimate Mom (2009). She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard (Bud) McGovern and sister, Jean Kanavos. Roberta is survived by her two loving children, Butch McGovern (Shelly) of Fort Myers, FL, and Kathleen Crews (Dennis) of Omaha, NE; one brother, Robert Mortali of Florida and Massachusetts; four adored grandchildren, Mallory, Carly, Kaylie and Bo; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. No formal services are scheduled at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice, 9470 Healthpark Circle, Fort Myers, FL, 33908 in loving memory of Roberta N.
