Alfred "Al" Weingart's Obituary
Alfred (Al) Weingart, age 85, passed away the morning of February 14, 2016 at his home in Ft. Myers. He was born in Great Neck, Long Island, New York and had been a Huron, Ohio resident since 1945. In recent years, he spent much of his time in Southwest Florida enjoying the sights the area has to offer, tending to his garden, and volunteering at several local organizations. He was preceded in death by his wife Valli McGurk in 1995, and his son Michael in 2011. He is sur-vived by a daughter, Sharon Sawicki in Cincinnati, Ohio and two grandchildren Sara and Han-nah Sawicki of Chicago, Illinois.Al began his teaching career in Huron where he taught fifth grade at Shawnee School. He later became Middle School Supervisor for the Erie County Public School System. He was principal of Meadowlawn School in Perkins for 19 years, and Elementary Curriculum Director in Perkins for two years.Al has been a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Huron for the past 68 years where he was an ordained elder having served as stewardship chairman, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Myers and its choir, joy-fully participating in Mrs. Edison’s Hymn Sings for many winters.After Al retired in 1992 he volunteered in various organizations including the visitor center at Old Woman Creek in Huron and the Firelands Community Hospital in Sandusky. During his time in Ft. Myers he was an active volunteer at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Theater, Lee County Manatee Park, the Florida Repertory Theatre and had more than a thousand hours of volunteer work at the Ft. Myers Edison/Ford Winter Estate.Al was a founding member of the Firelands chapter of Phi Delta Kappa and president of that or-ganization. He also had served as president of the Perkins Kiwanis Club, Mens Garden Club of Erie County, Erie County Retired Teachers Association, and the Huron Local Education Associa-tion. He was a life-time member of the Ohio Retired Teachers association and the Mens Garden Clubs of America. He was the 1977 Crusade Chairman for the Erie County unit of the American Cancer Society.At the request of the deceased there will be no visitation services, his body will be cremated, and a memorial service in his honor will take place in Huron, OH. The date for Al’s memorial service will be announced at a later time. Donations in Al’s memory may be sent to the church choirs of the First Presbyterian Church of either Huron, OH or Ft.
