Alice Patricia Groenthal's Obituary
Alice Patricia (Coan) Groenthal passed away quietly on January 2, 2016. She was 87 years old.Alice was born and raised in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. She was the daughter of the late Matthew and Agnes (Cronk) Coan. She attended PS 38 Elementary School (Rosedale, NY), Dominican Commercial HS (Jamaica) and Andrew Jackson HS (St Albans, NY). Alice married the love of her life George Thomas Ryan in 1952. They resided in Levittown, NY where they raised their 3 children and were active members of St. Bernard’s Parish. Her husband of 19 years, George passed away in 1971. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at New York Life, as a school crossing guard, and for Bank of America as a mortgage clerk. She married William Edward Groenthal in 1973 and they relocated to Fort Myers, Florida in the early 1990’s. Bill passed away in 1995. Her greatest enjoyments were golfing, reading and spending time with her family and friends, especially her children and grandson. In 2013, Alice moved to the assisted living community at Barrington Terrace in Fort Myers where she had many friends. During the past year, she was lovingly cared for in her daughter and son-in law’s home in Cape Coral.She is survived by her children: Kevin Ryan (Maryann) of Westlake, Ohio, Cathy Ann McCarthy (Timothy) of Cape Coral, Florida, and Robert Ryan (Beth) of Farmingdale, NY, and her beloved grandson, Matthew George Ryan. In addition, she is survived by her brother, George Coan (Maureen) and sister, Agnes Boller and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Matthew, Thomas, and William Coan, and her sisters Helen Warren and Mary Schreiber.A Visitation for Alice will take place form 9:00 -9:30 AM on Friday, January 6, 2016 inside the Chapel at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida 33907, (239) 936-0555. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM the same day at Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord, 8121 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, Florida 33919, (239) 481-7171.
