Angelo Baskaran's Obituary
Angelo (“Baski” to his family and childhood friends) was a Christian first and foremost with a solid assurance of his eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. He joined Cherrydale Baptist, where
he later married his wife, Amy Jones, ten years to the day after meeting her at Georgetown University graduate school. October 8, 2024 would have been their 30th wedding anniversary.
Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Angelo attended school there at St Thomas College Mount Lavinia, where he enjoyed playing cricket and tennis, and made many lifelong friends.
After moving to London, England from Sri Lanka in 1979, he studied and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in England, Scotland and Wales in 1981 and then went on to work first as an auditor and then a financial and acquisition advisor for English law firm, Peter T James and Co. It was through Peter James that Angelo came to Washington to work in their offices on Connecticut Avenue. He then also began going to Georgetown University grad school.
He received an MBA in Finance from City University, London, England, and an MS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service Graduate Program in International Trade and Finance, Landegger Honors Program in International Business Diplomacy, Washington, DC.
He was a gifted CFO, financial analyst and advisor on Wall Street in New York (The Chart Group) London (London Court Limited) and Hong Kong (MBf).
After Wall Street, Angelo was CFO and Finance Director of a London Stock Exchange-listed oil and gas company, President Energy, traveling extensively to Texas and Louisiana. He later served as CFO of biotechnology company 3D Biosurfaces Technologies LLC
of Tucson, Arizona and London. He was also a financial advisor to other technology companies in the Washington DC area.
As to Angelo’s character, personality, and abilities, he was simply a remarkable man!
An impeccable gentleman in every respect, Angelo was unfailingly polite, kind, considerate, and gentle in his ways. Humble and down-to-earth, he was generous of spirit with a ready smile and a dry sense of humor. He was charming. As one friend and trading colleague Juan Veiga described him, “Angelo was super super intelligent and so kind and generous with his time.” Even in his last days, he was incredibly kind to the people who were helping him at George Washington University Hospital. It is a testament to Angelo’s character that many of his doctors, nurses —especially from the ICU — and the cleaning lady, sweet Mary, came to give Amy their condolences personally. She thanks them for their compassion, gentleness and knowledge attended to trying to help Angelo recover from the ravages to his body from radiation and chemotherapy.
Angelo was extremely knowledgeable in a variety of subjects, especially economics and finance, history, classical music, politics, and more. He was never rude, patronizing, or condescending towards anyone about anything.
With excellent taste all around Angelo loved art — especially the Old Masters and Salvador Dalí—sculpture, architecture, music, and the performing arts — especially classical opera, ballet and Shakespeare plays. He also appreciated a good Saville Row suit and favored the woven silk ties from Budd in Jermyn Street, London.
Angelo had a tremendous heart for animals, especially for his and Amy’s beloved cats and the dogs of friends Tina, Ian, Sue, Ray, and Diane. He had recently taken to watching animal rescue videos and they touched him deeply. He was very sensitive and compassionate, and even more so as his suffering grew.
He loved flowers — especially roses and orchids— and grew roses at their home in Arlington ,Virginia. He and Amy would attend the Smithsonian Institution’s annual orchid show and always enjoyed visiting the botanic gardens in Washington DC, especially for the autumn mums display and the Christmas season’s elaborate miniature train scenarios incorporating all types of organic materials in their construction.
Angelo and Amy loved to eat good food. He was an accomplished home cook, and he and Amy enjoyed cooking and dining out on many cuisines: Indian, French, Italian, Vietnamese, Thai, Sri Lankan, Chinese, and Cajun food. Fish and Chips, too. For dessert he’d pick ice cream or chocolate— especially Belgian dark chocolate and eclairs.
His wife, Amy, wants to express her profound love, gratitude, and affection for the people who loved and supported Angelo so generously throughout their long friendships. Those people are Tina Capel, Ian and Sue Parker, Ray Shilling, and Lisa And David Nicks. He loved them dearly. Angelo also enjoyed a deep spiritual bond and friendship with two very special people from Cherrydale Baptist Church: friends Mark Dronfield and Pastor Brian Main. They were wonderful support and friends to Angelo and Amy.
Angelo will be sorely missed by his family, friends and especially Amy. She is indescribably grateful (as is Angelo) to the Lord Jesus Christ for His grace, mercy, salvation, and promise that they will be reunited in heaven, and then will be resurrected to be with the Lord and other believers on a new and perfect earth.
Amy wants to tell you: “I have been heartened by the outpouring of love and support from Angelo’s friends from across the world. I want to thank especially my family for their kind support and love throughout all of our trials and tribulations.” Most importantly, she’d like to express that Angelo faced so many challenges with his health in his last few years, but always hade hope. She takes comfort in the fact that he was a Christ-follower and a strong believer in the Bible as the Word of God, heaven and the resurrection through faith in Jesus Christ. She knows he is with Jesus now and also fellow believers who have passed on ahead. Though he died, he lives.” Angelo expressed his desire that in lieu of flowers people donate in his memory to the Cherrydale Baptist Church missions fund.
He is survived by his wife, Amy, and his brother Andrew Satyendra of Melbourne, Australia, sister-in-law Dashi, and niece, Rachel, and nephew, Alex, and numerous cousins in London. Angelo was also included as a dear, well-beloved family member of Amy’s family. Everyone loved Angelo, a Gentle Warrior.

Angelo’s beloved verses of hope and inspiration from the Holy Bible
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16
——
“For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11
———
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” 2 Corinthians 2:9-10
——-
“My soul, wait in silence for God alone,
For my hope is from Him.
My refuge; I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my glory rest on God;
The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your hearts before Him;
God is a refuge for us.”
Psalm 62:5-8

Heaven’s Gain
By Amy Jones-Baskaran ©️

Angelo walks in glory on streets of gold,
Without suffering or pain.
His Savior’s there and,
arm in arm, they speak of wondrous things.
We cannot see this clearly,as sorrows touch our soul.
Yet we must remember:
Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
One day soon—the Lord knows when!—
He will call us home.
Just near the Pearly Gates we’ll meet,
And share all marvelous things.
Love we feel encompasses us, like nothing e’r before.
Praise God, with joy complete, not loss but Heaven’s gain.
