Arthur Perry Sommer, Jr's Obituary
Arthur Perry Sommer, Jr. died peacefully on Monday, November 19, 2018 at Hope Hospice surrounded by his loving family.A resident of Herons Glen, North Fort Myers for the past 12 years, Mr. Sommer was born in Orange, NJ on August 23, 1927, son of the late Arthur Perry Sommer Sr. and Margaret (Kohler) Sommer. Art was educated in East Orange public schools and graduated from Clifford Scott High School.Following graduation he enlisted in the Navy during WWII serving in the Pacific Fleet aboard the USS Arkansas. After being honorably discharged he attended and graduated from Rider University, Lawrenceville, NJ, majoring in Journalism and Business Administration.In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in New York aboard the Cristobal with ports of call in Haiti and Panama.On February 12, 1955 he married Ruth Ann Gilman and together they raised four wonderful children.Art leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Ruth; three children, Janet Gill (William), Robert (Kathleen) and William (Kathryn); five grandchildren, Kristen (Moore), Charles and Timothy, Elizabeth and Michael Gill; five great grandchildren, Anna, Ava, Jonah, Carly and Ruth E; one brother, Malcolm S. Wright of Poulsbo, WA: as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jean Margaret and brother, Bertrand H. Sommer.We are grateful to those who cared for Art as their own family, the dedicated healthcare providers at Cairn Park ALF and Hope Hospice.A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church, North Ft.
