Betty Pope's Obituary
Betty H. Pope April 6, 1923 – August 24, 2015Betty Pope, 92, passed away of natural causes at her home in Cypress Cove in Ft. Myers, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, who died at age 41. She is survived by her four daughters Jan, Lynn, Sherry and Amy; her grandchildren Melissa Jennifer and Paul Richard, and her best friend for 60 years, Kay Clinton.Betty was adored by her daughters, her grandchildren and her friends.She was an unusual woman of her generation, earning both an undergraduate degree from Smith and a Masters degree from the University of Michigan. She was an independent spirit, traveling to Russia and China 30 years ago.She loved sports having been raised as an only child to an All-American football player Steamer Horning, and his wife Georgianna Horning. While she watched all sports, including multiple sports and games at the same time, her favorite team was the Detroit Tigers. Her two sons-in-law, Tom and Dave, delighted in her insightful commentary on whatever sport they were watching together.A Life Master at bridge, she had a keen mind and a passion for the game, winning multiple tournaments in far flung locales.Betty and Kay were known in Cypress Cove for their road trips in Kay’s big Caddy and their nickname amongst friends was “Thelma and Louise”.We celebrate Betty’s love of life, family, friends and adventure. She asked that no memorial service be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to the National Parkinson Foundation.
