Bret Smart's Obituary
Bret Smart, 78, of Fort Myers passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024. Bret was born July 18, 1946, to Van and Emilie (Marlor) Smart in Oakland, California.
Bret has called Florida his home since 2008. Prior to that, Bret spent his childhood across California and Maryland, eventually attending university at the University of Maryland and earning a degree in psychology. After spending four years in the Air Force, Bret moved back to California where he met his wife Denise and started a family. Bret spent more than 35 years as a Federal Investigator with the Federal Trade Commission in Los Angeles before retiring and moving to Fort Myers. He was an avid ice hockey fan, lover of philosophy and religious exegesis, and never stopped listening to Frank Sinatra. Over almost 50 years of marriage, Denise never saw Bret without his famous mustache.
Bret is preceded in passing by his parents. Bret leaves his loving memory with his survivors: Denise, son Bret Jr., daughter Emilie, son-in-law, Chuck and their children, James, Hannah, and Jon, along with his sister Valerie, and nieces Michelle and Tiffany.
Bret's family has entrusted Fort Myers Memorial Garden with the tender care of his final arrangements. Bret will have a memorial service Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 11am. Those who would like to attend – but cannot be there in person – may join via Zoom by clicking the link below which will be live 10 minutes before the service begins on Thursday.
