Marilyn, there was no greater love story than yours; you and Ron were each other's "better half". I have cherished memories of our time as neighbors in the Panama Canal Zone in the 1970's. You and Ron were so influential in the Scouting program where our boys became friends and we did too. I'll never forget when I found a 6' Boa in my garden and called for Chuck and Ronnie to come and catch it which they did and added it to your other "pet" snakes; they were fearless! ( You were the perfect parents.)This must be a difficult time for you, Marilyn, but please know that your time apart is only temporary; yours is an eternal love.How happy that you have family close by and you are back "home" in Florida.My warmest thoughts and friendship always, Ann Alexander / Midvale, Utah

Dear Marilyn and family, I had the privilege of meeting Ron and Marilyn in Las Vegas with my husband Lt. Col.Robert T. Mantor for a short visit. He was a jovial and humorous man who made you feel that you knew him all your life. My husband and Ron served in the Air Force together and stayed lifelong friends, and Bob always called him "Bear". I think the name suited him because after meeting him I felt he was this sweet loveable "teddy bear" kind of guy that everyone loved. We had planned to meet again in Ft. Myers, Florida, but my beloved husband passed away in 2014 and I know Bob was there to welcome and hug his wonderful friend "Bear" in heaven.Rest in Peace with love and prayers to his family!Elaine H. I have known Ron since I was a very little girl, over 60 years, at which time he became such a good friend to my big brother, Lee. Growing up, I use to think of myself as a sort of "little sister" to Ron because he spent as much time at our home as he did at his own! Wherever I saw Ron, my brother was there too. I got "kicked out" of many "boys gatherings in the yard" when I became a pest to Ron, Lee, Steve or Herb! Years later, I introduced my husband to Ron at one of our high school reunions, as I had graduated from Miami Edison Senior High School in Miami, just as Ron had. My husband, Sal, became fast friends with Ron also. It seems that no matter who you were, Ron welcomed you into his world and was always there when you needed him most and expected him least! He just was there for you! He will be greatly missed by our family. Our thoughts are with his entire family during this difficult time, but we know that Ron will "always be around"! Ron will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him – family and friends alike.There are many memories of Ron that have come to mind in the past week and it is difficult to choose one. So many years and so many pleasant memories ! But, one does kind of stand out and in a way it encompasses the entire length of our friendship.When Ron was not to long in the hospital Aline and I had gone to a Saturday morning book sale at our local library. On the way home I spied a box turtle crossing the road (on a strong curve at that) and stopped so as to block the road and moved, the critter to the other side (in the direction that she was heading,of course). I could hardly wait to get home to give Ron a call and tell him about it. We laughed and talked about it for some time…and we were both transformed into just herp loving kids again. I guess that there are time machines of the mind. Ron will always be on mine.Lee Finley

We were sad to hear of Ron's passing. I found him to be an excellent teacher. He taught me everything I needed to know about taking the helm of the USAF Conference Center from him. For that I have always been grateful. I remember following one "training session" he took me fishing in the Everglades. I had never been to the Everglades. As we walked to his favorite fishing spot, he'd occasionally stop to let something slither across our path. Arriving at our destination, he pointed out a lone tree. He then taught me about alligators. He said I could never outrun an alligator, and that was what the tree was for. And by the way, that (he pointed to the water) is NOT a log. He then moved on to his fishing spot. I fished, watching that "log." It never moved. And that "log" watched me the entire time I was there… even when I practiced climbing that tree. So, Ron taught me everything I needed to know about fishing in the Everglades, also. I know he will be missed.Our deepest sympathy to Marilyn and the entire LaBar family. – Bob & Lynda Burns

The best father a girl could ask for! As a mother, I am amazed the patience and unconditional love you gave us. (Can't imagine the anguish my teen years caused you and mom). I can only hope that I am half as good at parenting as you were. Thousands of memories float through my head. I will miss you so so much. You gave so much to all of us..the love of the outdoors, reading, travel, exploring new places. A spirit for adventure, but also a sense of responsibility. But most of all, I think you gave us all a solid base to build our lives upon, a good sense of humor and a strong will. You used to tell me that God only helps those who help themselves- that's the quote I use most often with my kids:). Maybe some day I'll demonstrate the squid sneeze for kids or my grandchildren.
