Charles S. Eby's Obituary
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Charles S. Eby, M.D., age 78, who succumbed to cancer on December 23, 2014. He was born to Virginia Cornelius and Charles Sidney Eby, Sr. in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 15, 1936. He received a B.A. in Philosophy from Southern Methodist University intending to become a Methodist minister. Later deciding on the medical field, he earned an M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. In 1969, he completed a residency in Dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Following that, he spent two years as a dermatologist at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. Charlie was a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Corp. and served in Vietnam. In 1971, Charlie moved with his family to Fort Myers where he became the town’s first board certified dermatologist. His dedication to his patients and practice was evidenced by his hard work and his pride in not missing a day of work in 45 years of practice. He continued to seek specialized surgical training throughout his career including obtaining his certification from the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery in 1989. He was not only a dedicated doctor, but took much enjoyment over the years in the friendships he developed with his patients and their families until he was forced to give up the career he loved due to his illness. Few knew he was an accomplished horseman, teaching children to ride. He was the original owner and designer of DaVinci Farms here in Fort Myers and had homes in Sun Valley, Idaho, and Bonita Beach, Florida. His favorite escapes were hiking in the mountains, walking the beach or listening to classical music. The last few years he discovered the joy of learning to fly his Cessna 182. Few loved life as Charlie did…always cherishing his new experiences. Charlie is survived by his wife Janet, daughters, Susan (Kevin) Brown, Leigh (Larry) Scrabis, and Alison (Matt) Stone, grandchildren Regan, Sydney, Avery, Luke, Eliza and Elliott, and sisters Ginger (Sam) Dugger and Millie (Wayne) Wade. A special thank you to the staff who works on the 5th floor of LMHS Healthpark Medical Center, the staff at Life Care Center of Estero and at Hope Hospice for their loving care and support. Funeral Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second Street on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Baylor College of Medicine.
