Charles F. Spiro's Obituary
Charles F. Spiro of Punta Gorda, FL died on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 following some recent health challenges. Mr. Spiro was born on October 8, 1918 of Frederic L. Spiro and Helen (nee Woodward) Spiro in New York City, and spent his youth in Yorkers, NY, where he graduated from Charles E. Gorton H.S. as a member of the National Honor Society. He later attended the New York State College of Ceramic Engineering at Alfred University.He then spent the following years on Long Island, NY until his retirement at the end of 1973 when he moved to Naples, FL, and from thence to Montgomery, AL in 2005, later to Strasburg, VA in 2013 with his son and finally to Punta Gorda, FL in 2014 with his grandson.Mr. Spiro served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an Aerographers Mate teaching meteorology at the Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, NJ. and later became Commander of Malveme, NY Post 44 of the American Legion.In business, he was associated with Litho Chemical & Supply Co., Inc. leading producers of platemaking and press chemicals for the offset printing industry, becoming its president. He served as a director of the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation, and was elected to its Society of Fellows.Interested in civic and church altars, Mr. Spiro was the president of the Fox Hollow Homeowners Assoc. Of Old Westbury, NY, president of Villa Floresta Homeowners Assoc. of Wyndemere in Naples, FL and a multi-term president of Candlewood Knolls Community, Inc. of New Fairfield, CT. He served on the vestries of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Malveme, NY and St. John’s Episcopal Church of Naples, FL.In Naples, Mr. Spiro was president of the Naples Council of the U.S. Navy League and Commodore of the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. He, also, was active in the Power Squadron of Naples and Collier Harvest, a charitable food distributor. Further, he obtained a realtor’s license and was associated with Downing-Frye Realty, Inc. and Terra Realty Group.He is survived by his son Charles of Strasburg, VA, and his grandson Sergio Bertuzzi of Punta Gorda, FL. Mr. Spiro was predeceased by his dear and beloved wives Gladys (Caton) and Mary Ann (Dunn), and his daughter Laurel Bertuzzi. .Interment of ashes will be in the Gulf of Mexico, where Mr. Spiro enjoyed boating for many years. Contributions to the memory of Mr. Spiro can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
