Clifford C. Herdman's Obituary
Clifford C. Herdman, 83, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away peacefully at Cape Coral Hope Hospice on Monday, February 28, 2011.?á He was born in West New York, New Jersey in February 26, 1928 and went on to become a strong athlete, cutting-edge engineer, dedicated sportsman, and civic leader.?á While serving as a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy, he traveled the South Pacific playing center for the championship-winning Naval Traveling Basketball Team.?á He went on to be a standout scholar athlete at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and to get his MBA at New York University.?á He became a civil engineer who worked for the Port Authority of New York/ New Jersey for 42 years in charge of future planning for major thoroughfares like the George Washington Bridge and the major airports like Newark International and John F. Kennedy.?á He and his wife Doris, Santoro-Herdman, retired to Southwest Florida in 1994 where he was very active serving as secretary/treasurer of the Cape Coral Fishing Club; on the board of directors of the Cape Coral Historical Museum where he lovingly took care of the rose garden; and as a member of the beautification committee of Ft. Myers and Cape Coral.?á He was pre-deceased by his parents Mary Murphy and Charles Herdman.?á He is survived by his loving wife, Doris;?á his brother Ralph (Claire); his four children, Chris, Beth, Louise and Paul (Dana);?á two stepchildren, Sandra and Jerry (Bernadette); nine grandchildren, Sasha, Hali, Ayla, Emma, Kelsa, Leah, Olivia, Jesse and Jerry (Denise); one great grandson, Nicholas;?á Collectively, they shared thousands of memories catching blue fish, sharing jokes, ballroom dancing, playing hoops, working in his gardens, building tree forts and frog ponds and camping on Lake George.?á A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 11:30 AM at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Cape Coral, Florida.?á In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memeorial donations be made to Hope Hospice of Cape Coral or the Alvin Dubin Alzheimers Resource Center in Fort Myers, FL.?á Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home is assisting the family.
