D Bernie Downes' Obituary
D Bernie Downes, 90, passed away March 23, 2023 at his home in Cape Coral, FL. Bernie was married to Janet Downes for 69 years before her passing in March 2022. Bernie was born on June 4, 1932 to Frank and Evelyn (Weed) Downes in West Penobscot, Maine. He graduated from Clark High School in 1950. Bernie married Janet on August 16, 1952 and started a family. Bernie served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX as a radar technician. After his service, Bernie and Janet returned to Maine where he worked for several companies, Reed & Reed in Woolwich, NCI in Searsport and the Bucksport paper mill before joining Foxboro Instruments where he worked for 30 years. After retiring from Foxboro he worked at Central Maine Power at the Wyman Station as the lead instrumentation technician. His jobs took him to many places around New England as well Egypt. He was a member of the Masons for more than 60 years. After retiring he and Janet moved to Florida in 2012 to enjoy the sunshine. He especially enjoyed wood turning, home improvement projects and boating with the family.
Bernie is predeceased by his father and mother and his brother Charles Downes and his wife Yvonne. He is survived by his daughter Lianne Hansen of Tacoma, Washington, his son Stephen Downes and his wife Janet of Monmouth, Maine, his son David Downes and his wife Erin of Cape Coral, Florida; five grandchildren; Nathaniel Downes and his wife Tiffany, Stephanie Mace and her wife Holly, Ryan Downes and his wife Nicole, Colby Downes and James Downes and his wife Kelsea. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, Gregory Downes, Samuel Spencer, Sophia Spencer, Aiden Downes, and Aaron Downes. Funeral arrangements in Maine have yet to be finalized.
