David J. Keane's Obituary
David J. Keane, 92, of Cape Coral, passed away Friday, October 12, 2018. He was born December 12, 1925 to David and Christine Keane, who preceded him in death. He was preceded in death by 5 sisters: Mary, Ellen, Katherine, Margaret and Ann, and 2 brothers: Thomas and John.Mr. Keane attended school in Elizabeth, NJ and left to enter the U.S. Navy in 1943 during World War II. After Boot Camp, he went to gunnery school in Little Creek, VA. He served on 3 ships as a gunner in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Europe, North Africa and Egypt. He saw action in numerous areas, especially England and Belgium from German Planes and Buzz Bombs. At one time, he was knocked unconscious from a Buzz Bomb that exploded next to his ship at the dock in Antwerp. He also helped shoot down a German Plane at the sea port in Antwerp.Mr. Keane lost one ship in the English Channel and was stationed in Plymouth, England until he could be re-assigned to another ship. David also spent time at St. Albans Naval Hospital.David was discharged in 1946 and married Gloria Schadewald that same year. They had 4 children: Karen Beth, David, Kevin and Bryan; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandson.David belonged to numerous clubs: Manahawkin Elks and Cape Coral Elks, Fraternal Order of Eagles in Cape Coral and Police and Fire Association of Cape Coral. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. He was also a member of the Turners where he was a gymnast before and after the war.Mr. Keane entered the Elizabeth Fire Department in 1949 and retired as a Captain in 1981. He leaves behind his close and loving friend, Mrs. Ivy Lucas.Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 16, 2018 in the chapel of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Friends will be received from 1:00 pm until the time of the service.
