David Curtis Smith's Obituary
David Curtis Smith, 84, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.
Born July 23, 1941, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, David was the son of the late Curtis B. Smith and Helen Irene (Nicely) Smith. He was raised in Parkersburg and later made Fort Myers his home, where he had resided since 1988.
David was a proud graduate of Penn State University, Class of 1961, where he earned his associate degree in agronomy. A lifelong passion for golf shaped both his career and his leisure. In 1989, he co-founded S&S Golf Management with his sister, a venture he led with dedication until his retirement in 2009. David was an avid golfer and achieved the distinction of becoming a Class A PGA Golf Professional. David was the previous owner of South Hills Golf Course and partner in Cloverdale Meat Packing Plant in Parkersburg
In addition to his professional accomplishments, David gave generously of his time as a high school and college basketball referee for 20 years, earning respect for his fairness and commitment to the game. He was a devoted sports enthusiast and a loyal fan of college football, especially Penn State University. David also ran the state high school golf tournament in West Virginia for the WVSSAC for many years. David was proud to be a member of the Masonic Lodge in Parkersburg.
David was a faithful Christian whose faith guided his life. He met twice weekly for breakfast with two men’s prayer groups, finding strength and fellowship in those gatherings. Above all else, family was most important to David, and he cherished the time spent with those he loved.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Sandra M. Smith of Ft. Myers, FL. Daughters Terry L Papp (Jim) of Ft. Myers, FL, and Sherry D. Morris (JR) of Parkersburg, WV. Grandsons David C Carnes (Anne) of Sebnitz, Germany, Jason M. Carnes (Mollie) of Cape Coral, FL, Benjamin T. Palmer (Cat) of Parkersburg, WV, R. Scott Rejonis (Monika) of Fairborn, OH, and Daniel W. Palmer (Bailey) of Washington, WV. Great grandchildren Emily, Aiden, Jamie, Madison, Mila, Gabriela, and Reagan. He also leaves behind his lovely dog, Milly.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Estero Church, 8088 Lords Way, Estero, FL 33928. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Additional services will be held in Parkersburg, West Virginia. These services will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Lambert Tatman on Pike Street. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. David will be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in David's name may be made to Estero Church, InterFaith Chairities of Lee County, or a charity of your choice.
