Doris Irene Stevens' Obituary
Doris Irene Stevens, age 95, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family, on March 7, 2016 in St. James City, FL. Doris was born June 24, 1920 south of Mitchell, SD to Emil and Florence Anderson. She had a wonderful childhood. She grew up on a farm riding horses and enjoying the outdoors. She attended a country grade school and graduated from Mitchell High School where she met her future husband, Maurice Stevens. They were married August 27, l939. They were blessed with three children: Marilyn, Janice, and Daniel.Doris worked in the family owned motel and retail businesses in Mitchell, SD. In 1977, the couple moved to Florida where they developed a tropical palm nursery with their son Dan.Doris was very active in Bible studies, adult activities and leadership positions in the churches she attended. During her grandchildren’s growing up years, she enjoyed spending time with them horseback riding, fishing and attending their activities. In recent years, she enjoyed being a member of the Joy Bible Study Class at Pine Island United Methodist Church.She will be remembered as a woman who prayed daily for her family and for others who needed to be brought before the Lord. As Proverbs 31:30 says, “A woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.” Doris was such a woman. She was loved by family and friends. She will be greatly missed.Blessed for having shared her life are her children: Marilyn (Olin) Odland, of Sioux Falls, SD, Jan Stevens of Spanish Fort, AL. and Dan (Mary Kaye) Stevens of St. James City, FL.; and her grandchildren: Tim (Marcia) Odland, Steve (Marcy) Odland, Rick (Amy) Odland, Karisa (Scott) Workman, Craig (Staci) Stevens, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, a sister Deneice Wettstein and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, a grandson, her parents, and a brother.A Memorial Service for Doris will be celebrated by Pastor Edward Kellum at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Pine Island United Methodist Church, 5701 Pine Island Road., Bokeelia, FL 33922, (239) 283-2386.
