Douglas Allen Scratchley's Obituary
Douglas Allen Scratchley, 71, died Tuesday morning, August 30, 2016 at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, FL. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33907. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Hope Hospice. Douglas was born March 16, 1945 in Newark, NJ. Doug moved with his parents and sister to Fort Myers in 1956. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966. Mr. Scratchley was a licensed master plumber who owned Edison Plumbing, with offices in Fort Myers and later, LaBelle. Doug worked for Centex Homes and was Field Manager of the Year in 2003 and 2004. Doug enjoyed fishing, catching a 300 – pound blue marlin in July of 1986. In retirement, Doug became an avid tennis player. During a tennis match on July 31, 2016, Doug fell, hit his head and suffered a traumatic brain injury that claimed his life. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Margaret Ann (Vinson) Scratchley; Lisa (Harrington) Yeslow and her husband, Mark; Scott Harrington and his wife Amy; and Rebecca (Harrington) Kyle and her husband, Bruce; and by his sister Patricia Ann Roth, and her husband, Richard. Other survivors include eight grandchildren: Jack, Elizabeth and Joseph Yeslow; Leyton and Haven Harrington; and Harrison, Reece and Julia Kyle; a nephew, Joseph “Jay” Hill; and a niece, Elizabeth (Hill) Wheeler. Mr. Scratchley was preceded in death by his parents, William Preston and Ann (Gerst) Scratchley; son, Douglas A. Scratchley, Jr. and his wife Cristy; and a half-brother, William P. Scratchley.
