We will miss Uncle Doug...Look how dapper he looked at his sister Doris's 90th birthday celebration at the bungalow. Love and prayers, Cam and Glenn
Very sorry to hear about MR Smith. I remember him well from my days growing up in Ouster Bay. My parents became close friends and even met up in Florida on a number of occasions. I am thinking of all of you at this difficult time. COVID 19 has caused too much pain and suffering. I remember how excited he was when you moved from I believe Hill Drive to the house near the beach on Laurel Cove Road - Tom Barnett
What can I say about Mr. Smith - and he was always MR. Smith to me, and always will be. Kind, funny, steady, smart - I could go on. The Smith family welcomed me from an early age (12 to be exact) and he was the anchor of the family. When my own father died shortly after my 18th birthday, their family became a refuge for a young man who was, from time to time, overwhelmed and lost. He offered guidance when needed and advice when requested. I always felt welcome at the Smith's - and he was the chief welcomer. I most remember his wry sense of humor - a trait I think we shared. He seemed to appreciate my snarky observations more than the average person, and I appreciated his as well! He could put you at ease or put you in your place, with a glance. And, I learned the most important thing about boats from Mr. Smith - "A hole in the water into which one pours money"!
I regret that distance kept me from seeing him in these past years, but I take some comfort in the hope that he knew that he had a role in making me the man I am today. For that I will be forever grateful! In my own way, I loved this man, and I will miss him! God Bless Mrs. Smith, and all my "adopted" siblings - Doug, Scott, Sharon, Terry and my Birthday Buddy, Heather. May the Good Lord cradle Mr. Smith in the hollow of His hand!
Uncle Doug was my favorite uncle. Loved his sense of humor.....
I met Mr Smith when my brother Matt met & married his beautiful daughter Sharon. He was warm & welcoming from day one. Whenever I would see him at a family gathering he would always welcome me with a big smile and a hug. He had a way of making me feel like I was part of the group. He was quick to laugh and he always had a sparkle of mischief in his eyes. Although I had not seen The Smiths much over the past few years, from the stories I heard from Matt & Sharon and the kids, that sparkle never faded. Rest easy Mr Smith. You were one of the great ones.
I always got a kick out of Doug's great sense of humor! And though we may now live far away, our family has many fond memories of our childhood summers spent with Uncle Doug, Aunt Maureen, and our cousins at grandma's house near the beach on Long Island. So many fish, so many tall tales! We will miss you, Doug!
Love to all,

My first memory of Uncle Doug was traveling to Rochester for his college graduation with Viola and Charlie and how incredibly proud and happy Viola was.
My second memory was having Uncle Doug walk up to me on the beach one July morning in Jamesport not far East of the Doll House Bungalow. Uncle Doug had just returned from his voyage to Antarctica on the USS Atka. He gave me a pair of Lieutenant's Bars. I remember how kind and considerate Doug was to me during Smith family picnics at the Smith Lane Bungalow. I remember riding with Doug and Viola to Deep Hollow Ranch in Montauk in the green '56 Chevy Station Wagon to a horseshow on my 7th Birthday. Doug talked all about seeing "Rock around the Clock" with Bill Haley and the Comets the night before in the Drive-In.
I remember all of the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at Grandpa & Grandma's house in Calverton and how much fun Uncle Doug was.
I remember the great dinner at the Inn at Napeaugue with Doug, Maureen, Herbie, Shirley, Mom, Dad, Gail and I the night before chartering a fishing boat in Montauk. The next day we caught enough Stripped Bass to fill several large garbage bags. We caught Strippers till we all were too tired to reel in anymore.
The many Friday night dinners Cutchogue, Greenport and Quogue before the Smith Family Picnic. The many wonderful dinners at Oyster Bay Cove.
Doug giving me a copy of one of his favorite books, "The Source" by James Mitchener and how impactful reading it was.
Uncle Doug's unwavering love and support for Aunt Maureen and each of his children and grandchildren.
The banter between Uncle Doug and Herbie. Especially at times like when we were butchering pigs in February at the Smith Farm.
The story about being upgraded to a luxury suite in the Waldorf Towers after being selected by the US Secret Service to anomalously play a body double for President George Herbert Walker Bush while at business meeting in Manhattan.
Everyone who really knew my Uncle Doug respected his humility, his listening skills, his faith and spoke well of him. In my view that says a lot about "the smart one" in the Smith family.
Popsicle (as I liked to call him) was a great family man, pep-talker, advice-giver, and jokester. With every phone call or visit, he was sure to make you laugh while sharing his wisdom at the same time. Although I’m sure he didn’t appreciate his own granddaughter giving him nursing orders, he still accepted my “suggestions” with an open mind complete with his distinct chuckle. I am so very thankful for the countless sports games he attended and time spent talking on the phone. You are so greatly missed Pop but we know you are with us every day - I will certainly smile whenever I see your favorite Werther’s “cough drops”.
I don't know how to express my feelings about your dad. We were very close for a lot of years. One incident that we recalled together was the night during a snowstorm when Doug and Maureen drove Doug’s new car to our house and we took the Jeep into Oyster Bay for dinner. It was quite an experience because the owner had to call the police on a couple who were fighting. After dinner we went back to our house and decided it would be better if I drove Doug & Maureen home in the Jeep because of the snow. Well that was fine except the next morning we found a big tree limb had fallen on Doug’s new car. Doug and I have reminisced about that often. Again I can't express my feelings on his passing.
Bless you all😂😩❤️
