Earl Edgar Hering's Obituary
Earl Edgar Hering, age 89 of Pompano Beach, Florida died peacefully on November 24, 2020 at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale of congestive heart failure.
Born on March 18, 1931 in Mount Carmel, Illinois, Earl was one of ten children of August and Edna (Crackle) Hering. Earl is preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings: Robert Hering, Charles Hering, Howard Hering, Wilma Newport, Margaret Reid, James Hering, Helen Booth, Emma Searby and Lawrence Hering. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth (Greene) Hering, son William Jay Hering and his husband Barry Harman, all of Pompano Beach. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Earl grew up on the Hering family farm in rural Browns, Illinois and graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1950. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in the U.S. and Europe. While on a military leave Earl was introduced to Ruth Greene on a blind date and the couple married 30 days later July 23, 1953. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this past July.
His professional career includes farming; IBM (data processing division), Indianapolis Raceway Park (grounds maintenance), Brownsburg School Systems (bus driver) and Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens (special projects and maintenance). Earl and his wife enjoyed travel and toured much of the continental United States, Spain, Hawaii, and Mexico.
Prior to moving to Pompano Beach, FL., Earl, and his wife Ruth lived in Fort Myers, FL for over 24 years where he worked for Fort Myers Memorial Gardens with the maintenance division and special projects. Just a few of Earl’s life accomplishments and memberships include: Past Cub Master of Pack 393, Past Scout Master of Troop 303, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine, American Legion and VFW. He is past President of the Murat Shrine Reception Unit and member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. He is a proud U.S. Air Force Korean War Veteran. On September 26, 2017 Earl was escorted by his son Jay on the Honor Flight which fly WW II, Korean and Vietnam War veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials built to honor their service and sacrifices.
Following cremation, graveside services with military honors will be held at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens, Fort Myers, Florida. For those who wish memorial contributions may be donated to the family for later determination.
