Edwin Charles Northup, 91, passed away at the Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral, Florida on Saturday, September 15, 2012.?áHe was born in early 1921 in upstate New York.?áHe was the only child of Merritt C. Northup and Jennette J. Northup of Fort Ann, New York where he lived and grew up. Growing up, he loved to snow ski and was an avid tennis player.?áHe graduated from Fort Ann High School with honors and went on to graduate from St. Lawrence University with a degree in Chemistry. Ed grew up in the depression and worked hard to help put himself through college at such jobs as waiting tables and housesitting.?áEd?ÇÖs lifelong desire was to be a medical doctor.?áHe went on to medical school at Rochester but had to transfer to Bowman Gray Medical School and afterwards briefly lived in North Carolina and Florida.?áAs he decided to specialize in Anesthesiology, he attended the Anesthesia residency program at Charity Hospital in New Orleans with renowned anesthesiologist Dr. John Adriani, MD. In New Orleans, Ed met his future wife Clytee of Louisville, Mississippi.?áThey were married over 45 years, until her death in 1993.?áIn the early 1950?ÇÖs, Clytee and Ed moved to St. Petersburg, Florida with their two young children.?áEd practiced Anesthesiology in St. Petersburg for over 25 years.?áHe was Chief Anesthesiologist when he retired.?áDuring his years in St. Pete and beyond, Ed was always an avid golfer.?áAfter medicine and his family, golf was his true love and avocation.?áHe was active in the Methodist Church.?áHe always continued to greatly enjoy tennis and baseball as a fan. Ed and Clytee retired to Fort Myers, Florida in the 1980?ÇÖs.?áEd and Clytee are survived by their daughter, Linda Carter and her husband John; their son Charles M. Northup and his wife Nancy; their grandchildren Alison, Kristin and Robyn; and their great grandson, Brayden. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 3:15 PM at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, Florida 33907?á?á 239-936-0555. Condolences may be left at www.fortmyersmemorial.com. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in Ed?ÇÖs name to Hope Hospice in Lee County, Florida.
