My sisters Adaline Allen Shinkle, Margo Allen Finlayson and I, Rhoda Allen Brooks, were so sad to here your mother had died when we tried to reach her at Shell Point on arriving a few days ago to Captiva. She and your father were wonderful friends of our parents, Bill and Adaline Allen, and we all looked forward to seeing them when we visited. After our mother died, They were true and loyal friends to Dad, going back to Sanibel for Friday cocktails or hosting him for Sunday brunches at Shell Point. It will be sad to be here and not see them anymore. The obituary in the Fort Myers paper was perfect, and the picture of Ellen showed her style and sense of fun. We will miss her but have fond memories to revisit.Sincerely, Rhoda Brooks

Ellen was the very definition of a great lady. I have the privilege of being the museum director at Victoria Mansion, Ellen’s grandparent’s home in Portland, now an internationally-recognized National Historic Landmark. I met her early on in my tenure and was struck by her grace, vivacity, and detailed memories of visiting the house when she was young. She was generous with her knowledge, interest, support, and return of family-owned items to their original settings here. From a historical perspective, her passing severs the last ties of a Libby family member that actually experienced the Mansion as a home. Her visits were always a highlight for the staff, and much of what we know about the Libby family occupancy of the house is based on her reminiscences. On behalf of the trustees and staff, I send our condolences. She will truly be missed.

To her family thank you for sharing such a elegant lady with us. She was a delight to see come into my shop. Such grace and didinity I have never seen before. She was a real treasure. She will be thought of often and always fondly. God bless you as she is welcomed into the arms of our loving lord. She will be missed.

To Ellen’s sons, I first met your mother and your grandmother at a Wellesley Club picnic in Brunswick in 1969. I was a new bride and was happy to have my Wellesley connection. Shortly thereafter, I found myself at a meeting at your mother’s home by the water. When you parents moved to their new home and sold that one your grandmother said to me “Ellen sold a beautiful house and bought an unattractive one. Leave it to your grandmother to make us all giggle. Over the years I became good friends with your mother and love her youthful enthusiasm. She arranged wonderful summer Wellesley Club picnic under at tent at the Victorian Mansion and then gave the tour herself. What a treat. When I was in charge of the Wellesley Clubs 100 anniversary party and had one club member who was a writer and another a computer educator, they created a video of the Club’s history and found a fellow Wellesley alum in Florida to interview your mother for the video. She was a real highlight. What a wonderfully life well lived for such a long time. She will always be part of my memory.
