Evelyn DeCarlo Harriman's Obituary
Evelyn DeCarlo Harriman of Estero, Florida passed away February 21, 2017 peacefully after a long illness at the Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida.She was born August 17, 1940 at the Hale Hospital in Haverhill, MA to Laura Damiano DeCarlo and Emilio William DeCarlo. Her parents divorced when she was very young and she was raised by her Mother and her extended Damiano family on Bartlett Street in Haverhill. She became a roller skater in her early teens at Skateland Haverhill where she met her future husband Harold Harriman of Groveland. They eventually became partners in competitive roller dance skating and competed in the National meet in Oakland, CA in 1957. After their marriage in 1957 they lived in Groveland and then moved to Marstons MIlls on Cape Cod in 1967 where they raised their 3 daughters Robynne Thomas (David), Milissa Harriman MacCormick (Thomas), both of Sandwich, MA and Vikki Harriman Blanchard (Raymond) of Fayette, ME. She was a wonderfully loving, considerate and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother and friend to so very many people. Evelyn was known for her love of cooking and her skill especially for Italian dishes passed down from her Grandmother and Aunt. Those who enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and her Christmas Eve dishes of the 7 fishes will never forget them.Evelyn was an accomplished artist especially in acrylics and oils, she was a former member of the Haverhill and Newburyport Art Associations. She and her Mother-in-law operated the Rainbow Workshop ceramic studio for several years in Groveland, and after moving to Cape Cod she continued her studies at the Cape Cod Art Association with her mentor Samier Barber of Hyannis. She was also a charter member of the Harriman Family Association.In 1980, Evelyn and her husband returned to their love of roller skating teaching a new generation of skaters artistic roller skating in Hyannis and later at several other rinks in Southeastern Massachusetts.In the 1990’s Evelyn and her husband Harold were able to travel to Europe several times visiting her ancestral home of Italy which she enjoyed immensely. Their youngest daughter Milissa attended college in Belfast, Ireland and they visited Ireland and the British Isles and the whole family and many friends attended Milissa’s wedding in Moneyglass, Ireland.In 2000 our daughter Vikki selflessly gave her mother a much needed kidney which allowed her to have an additional 16 years of relatively good health.Besides her Husband Harold and her 3 daughters and their husbands she is survived by 9 grandchildren. Lacy Dent (Andrew), Tyler Thomas (Michelle), Jacob Thomas, Haley Harriman, Natashja, Rodai, Marsaili, Taileleith MacCormick and Andrew Blanchard, her Sisters Janis Blonda (Christopher), Judy Durling and several nieces and nephew and cousins and her special niece Alexia DeCarlo of Pembroke Pines, FL.A celebration of her life will be held in Florida and on Cape Cod at a later date to be announced.
