On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, Frances Crank McGillicuddy, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 83. Frances was born on February 16, 1936 in Richmond, Virginia to Charles Edward and Mary Cochran Crank. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and received her BA degree in religion with a minor in music from Randolph-Macon College in 1958.
Frances married William Walton Hopkins, Jr., an Air Force pilot, and began her career as a military wife and mother. Moving on an average of every two years, Frances created a safe haven for her family and taught her three daughters to appreciate the various cultures of the places they lived and traveled overseas. She taught piano lessons and a love of classical music to many students through her travels. When their marriage ended on the brink of an early retirement, Frances taught her daughters stamina and resolve by beginning a second career as a 4th grade teacher at Good Shepherd Lutheran School in North Ft. Myers, Florida. Frances loved teaching and working with students. Her high expectations showed her respect for students and a belief that all could learn. She especially loved her American Revolution unit and sharing the rich history of her beloved Virginia.
Frances met and married the love of her life, John Sheppard McGillicuddy, later in life and at a time when truth and clarity brought healing and vision. Together John and Frances shared their love of Christ and Christian education through 30 years of teaching and administration at several Christian schools, the last being First Baptist Academy, Naples, Florida. Even though Frances battled Alzheimer’s at the end of her life, she knew and loved her husband, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She showed kindness to her healthcare assistants who spoke of loving her and asking her to pray for them, and she kept a positive disposition. More than anything, Frances loved her morning prayer time and luncheon dates with John.
Frances is survived by her husband, John McGillicuddy, her daughters and sons-in-law: Mary and Dave Kistel, Cyndy and Dave Anthony, Beth and John Acampora, and twenty-one combined grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service for Frances will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 1, 2020 in the Chapel at First Baptist Church of Naples, 3000 Orange Blossom Dr, Naples, FL 34109, (239) 597-6057. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Frances be directed to the Alzheimer's Support Network of Naples, 660 Tamiami Trail N., Suite # 21, Naples, FL 34102, (239) 262-8388.
