Frank G. Benak's Obituary
Frank G. Benak, age 79, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, in Fort Myers. Born on September 21, 1945, in Ludington, Michigan, Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life was defined by service, integrity, and dedication to others.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary (Stauffer). Together, they built a loving family and shared a life grounded in commitment and compassion. He was the proud father of John, Jim (Lindsey Candey), and Brian (Erin), and the adored grandfather of Nick and Grace, James "LJ" and Reese, and Leah and Drew.
Frank is further survived by his brother George (Mary Jo), his sister Rose Benak-Robinson (Issac Baumfeld), sister-in-law Ann Stauffer and many cherished nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Mildred.
Frank’s career began in education, teaching science at St. Eugene’s Catholic School in Chicago, before returning to Western Springs to join his father at Benak Shell Service Station. After working together for almost 20 years, Frank took over the business and operated it for more than two decades.
Frank also dedicated over 30 years to the Western Springs Fire Department, serving from January 1975 until September 2005. Of those three decades, he led the department with distinction as Fire Chief for 23 years. Under his leadership, the department thrived through innovation, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to public safety.
After retiring, Frank and Mary relocated to Fort Myers, Florida, where he remained actively involved in his community through his membership at the St. Charles Yacht Club. He found joy in boating, social gatherings, and the friendship of fellow members.
Frank’s legacy lives on in the generations he inspired, the community he protected, and the many lives he touched with his warmth, humility, and strong sense of duty.
A memorial service to celebrate Frank’s life will be held at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and Cemetery on July 9, 2025, at 11 am.
