Gail Rothwell's Obituary
Gail Rothwell, 74, of New York, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of elegance, compassion, and quiet strength. Gail lived an adventurous life filled with creativity, love, and unwavering determination, always guided by a deep desire to uplift others.
Born in the Bronx to her devoted parents, Alfred and Evelyn, Gail’s character was shaped early by the values of discipline, service, and kindness. Her father, Alfred, served as a retired Army colonel with the 42nd Infantry Division, and her mother, Evelyn, was a beloved first-grade teacher who nurtured young minds with patience and care. From them, Gail inherited both resilience and heart. She often spoke fondly of her humble upbringing, where she first cultivated her keen eye for beauty in everyday surroundings.
Gail attended an all-girls Catholic high school before continuing her education at the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising, where her natural creativity and business acumen began to flourish. She built an impressive career doing what she truly loved. Beginning in her early twenties as an assistant buyer in children’s wear, Gail’s talent and determination carried her steadily forward. Through dedication and vision, she rose to become President of Nine West footwear, later channeling her entrepreneurial spirit into opening her own business. She led with both style and substance, earning admiration not only for her professional success but for the integrity with which she achieved it.
Yet beyond her professional accomplishments, Gail’s greatest pride was found in helping others. Her compassion became one of her most enduring legacies through the annual shopping benefit she founded in support of The Retreat, a nonprofit domestic violence agency serving women and children. Gail served as President of the Board for many years, dedicating her time, energy, and heart to ensuring safety and hope for countless families. Her leadership made a profound and lasting difference in many lives.
Gail was a woman of warmth and wit, known for her impeccable taste, generous spirit, and ability to light up a room with her smile. She believed deeply in embracing life as it unfolds. She once reflected, “We spend a lot of time trying to put square pegs in round holes. For the first time in life, I don't have a plan. Sometimes you just have to go with it.” Her words serve as a gentle reminder to not overthink, to live each day fully, and to play the cards we are dealt with grace, courage, and a smile.
She is lovingly survived by her sister, Judy Studer; her brother-in-law, Thomas Studer; her nephews and their spouses, Tommy Studer and Nikki Studer, and Sam Studer and Monica Hudson; and her cherished dog, Betty, who brought her endless companionship and joy. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Susan, whose memory she carried in her heart always.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Retreat women’s shelter, continuing Gail’s lifelong mission of compassion and care.
