Mrs. Gloria F. Wood's Obituary
Gloria F. Wood, 94, of Fort Myers, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2019. She was born August 10, 1925 in Staten Island, NY to Michael J. and Matilda (Seta) Femenella.
Mrs. Wood received her Bachelor of Arts Degree, cum laude, in Mathematics from Wayne College, Staten Island, in 1946. She received her Master's Degree from Columbia University in 1948. For 9 years, she taught mathematics in the city of New York and for 25 years in Fort Myers, including 4 years in the Mathematical Laboratory of Edison College.
She introduced the first year of high school algebra for eighth graders and the first year of plane geometry for ninth graders at Fort Myers, Jr. High School. She was selected to attend the University of Arkansas in 1962 to study mathematics under the National Science Foundation. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa International.
Together with her husband, George F. Wood, who died in 1995, she worked to construct a miniature replica of Blount's General Store on the northwest corner of First and Hendry Streets around 1900. It is on display along with other shops and buildings in miniature at the Fort Myers Historical Museum. She also volunteered as a cuddler at HealthPark Medical Center and was a member of the Royal Palm Yacht Club since 1963 when she married her husband.
She was a an extraordinary member of Holy Communion at Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord where a memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Monday, December 30, 2019. The church is located at: 8121 Cypress Lake Dr, Fort Myers, FL 33919.
