Herbert Edward Poppe's Obituary
Herbert Edward Poppe, 75, a resident of Fort Myers, FL since 2013, formerly of Schererville, IN passed away Friday, August 25, 2023 in Fort Myers, FL. He was born November 22, 1947 in Hammond, IN to the late Herbert and Marie (nee Kleine) Poppe.
Herbert is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Cheryl Poppe of Fort Myers, FL; five children, Kimberly (Marc) Genender of St. John, IN, Judy (Ben) Johnson of Wheatfield, IN, Gina (Chad) Blevins of Dyer, IN, Kristyn Poppe of Hammond, IN and Heather (Nike) Textor of Lowell, IN and brother-in-law, Timothy Robertson. Along with his five children, he was blessed with 15 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces, nephew, and extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, and his beloved sister, Virginia Robertson.
Herb was a patriot. He proudly volunteered and served with the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam from 1966 through 1967. His life of commitment to the United States, the Marine Corps, and fellow veterans continued to be a lifelong pleasure of Herb’s as he served as Commandant of the Calumet Detachment of the Marine Corps League for 7 years. His efforts resulted in support for countless veteran’s organizations including the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, Heart of a Marine Foundation, and LCPL Phillip Martini Foundation, to name a few. Herb’s generous ways, unwavering support, and insightful guidance made him the mentor to many and brother to all who served.
Herb also had a lifelong commitment to his clients and coworkers. He retired from Wells Fargo Home Mortgage after nearly 30 years of service in the mortgage industry.
Thank you to all family and friends who knew and loved him throughout the years. To know Herb was to love him. Whether he was offering his guidance, support, a smile, or even cracking one of his infamous ‘jokes’ – he was always there for you.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 500 North Gate Drive, Dyer, IN 46311. A luncheon will follow in the Parish Hall of the church. Herb will be laid to rest at 2:30 PM, following the luncheon at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W. Hoff Road, Elwood, IL 60421.
