Herman Hebbeler's Obituary
Herman J. Hebbeler, age 92, of Ft. Myers, FL passed away peacefully on December 6, 2023 at the Larsen Pavilion, Shell Point Retirement Community.
Herman was born in Brooklyn, NY to Emma (nee Behringer) and Herman H. Hebbeler on February 12, 1931. He went to Grover Cleveland High School graduating in 1949. In 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He was stationed in Parris Island, SC and served as a military police officer. He was honorably discharged in November 1959. He went on to earn a degree in Business from St. Johns University. Herman worked in the insurance industry at companies in NY and NJ during his career. His last job before retiring was as a Vice President for Chubb Insurance in NJ. During his first insurance job, after leaving full time service in the Marines, he met the love of his life Christa (nee Kruse) who he married in 1955. They moved from NY to NJ in 1964 and remained there for 42 years. In 2011 they moved to Shell Point Retirement Community in Ft. Myers, FL.
Herman enjoyed traveling (for work & pleasure), sports, watching old movies, collecting comic books and stamps, debating issues of the day, golf, performing in the Sedgefield Follies, and just being with family and friends. He was a loving husband and father, always putting “his girls” first. In 2017 Herman had the great honor of being chosen to take the Collier County Honor Flight to Washington DC with other veterans of WWII and Korea. It was one of the many highlights of his life. He was honest, witty, hard working, and grateful for everything he had.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Emma Hebbeler, son-in-law Rich Gabel, and his cousin Jean Scholl who he considered more a sister than cousin. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Christa, daughters Linda (Robert) Schmid of Knoxville, TN, Doreen (Dave) Moore of Austin, TX, his grandchildren Jonathan (Miranda) Gabel, Lauren (Tony) Morgan, David (Reese) Moore, Christopher Moore, 2 great grandchildren Paisley and Parker and god daughter Janis (Bill) Byers; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
