I only knew Mickey McLinden from the St. Leo College Prep/Holy Name Academy reunions, but he was an annual attendee with his lovely wife. We will miss him at future reunions. I'm so sorry for his family's loss……Margaret Herrmann Beaumont HNA 1957.
Mickey McLinden and I share a common home town, although he lived across Biscayne Bay and I lived in downtown Miami. We shared a common high school, St. Leo College Prep, But he was born in 1928 and I was three years older, 1925. That never kept us from being friends. It took us several years to wind up in the same town again–I had taken a new job in St. Petersburg, FL. in 1951, and within days who should show up on my doorstep but Mickey. He was a sports writer for our competition, the St. Petersburg Independent. So we resumed a friendship that spanned nearly 70 years. Those were busy newspaper years, and with growing families. The McLindens and the Schulte's had 10 children among them, and there were many opportunities for picnics and parties.Mickey moved to Nashville to work for the afternoon paper, The Banner, but I soon followed him, this time to a job on the Nashville Tennessean. I remember resuming our picnics and parties, made more fun by the fact that our children were the same age.We said good bye in 1959 when Mickey moved to the St. Louis Globe-Democrat,and I found a great job in Savannah, GA. When retirement loomed, it was natural that all of us would return to sunny Florida. I wound up in Vero and Mickey and Peg in Fort Myers. But we continued to rendezvous back at St. Leo, seeing old classmates and teachers we had known. Both of us were inspired by the Rev. James Hoge, a young priest who served as mentor/teacher for both of us at the St. Leo Chronicle. They were lovely growing up years for both of us.Mickey was unparalleled as a friend, and my heart is broken at the loss.I wish his wonderful spouse and his children all the the best. We will all miss him.Final note: It is interesting that a statue is being dedicated to our football coachin early April. Father Marion Bowman. He was an inspiration to both of us.–God est my friend's soul, Henry (Hank) Schulte, Vero Beach, FL
Mickey and Peggy became close friends of my sister and her daughter (Dotty McKinnon and Becca Long) when they moved to Wisconsin. I was adopted along with them. What a wonderful family! We too enjoyed canoeing on the Wisconsin with them. Sadly, time and distance parted us, but Mickey will live forever in our memories.Fondly,Delores Jewell
There are people in the world that make you smile immediately when you see them. The ability of those people to do so stems from their own internal happiness. They can generate a laugh or simply make you smile by smiling at you. Mick Mclinden was one of those people. I am smiling simply looking at the picture here. I met Mick 15 years ago canoeing and camping out on the Wisconsin river with John Mclinden and our sons. It was a family tradition that John, Mike and Jim did with their Dad growing up. What an experience it was. From the moment I met him, thru leaving the weekend on the river, I so enjoyed his company. He could tell a story. Make you laugh. Pretty decent cook around the fire too!My favorite memories of Mick however will always be his speeches at Sara and Kiki's weddings! The man took the microphone and dazzled EVERYONE including members of the respective bands who usually pay no such attention to such things. He emoted love, warmth, humor and family as he stood and spoke. And speak he did….!!Mick Mclinden is in Heaven now and its a better place today then when it was the day prior. Please say hello and share some laughs with my Dad, John Kelly.I smile thinking of him too. You two were cut from the same cloth. I know you both are sorely missed by family and friends. God bless Mick Mclinden, Peggy and family.
