James Willis Graham's Obituary
On August 22, 2023, James Willis Graham, 93, passed away peacefully with his loving wife Linda by his side. He was born May 9, 1930, in Madison, WI to the late Willis and Anna (nee Pankratz) Graham.
He grew up in Madison with his older brother Gene, his sister Beverly, and lots of aunts & uncles since his mother was one of 15. They shared fun times and great family meals.
Graduation from High School brought many changes. He joined the Order of Cistercian of Strict Observance in Dubuque, Iowa. It was an austere life that incorporated prayer, manual labor, and “Lectio Divina”. Even though they were cloistered, he had the opportunity to study in Rome (1957-1959). Upon completing his Licentiae degree in Theology (1959), he became the Prefect of Studies. Jim was affiliated with New Melleray Abbey as a Trappist Monk and Priest for 22 years.
He continued his education at Loyola U of Chicago. Finishing his Doctorate Degree in Psychometric Measurements & Testing (1971), he started a new career, a new life as well as met and married Linda.
Jim took joy in spending time with his wife, whether it was International travel or camping. After 20 years with the American Dental Association, he retired and bought an RV. They camped their way from IL to FL each snow-bird season, initially settling in the Ocala area before moving to Fort Myers.
Jim’s typical day was watching the news stations. He loved learning about tax changes and investment strategies. But he most loved reading/studying scripture & theology daily. His love of scripture, lead him to continue using his talents by facilitating Bible study classes. When he wasn’t out hiking and exploring, he was researching what he would teach next. He had an extensive library of theology publications.
He was an avid reader, stamp collector, and truly enjoyed the challenge of financial investing. He and his sister Beverly would talk up a storm about new regs, tax changes, etc.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Reverend Eugene Graham; sister, Beverly A. Vareka and her husband, Joseph; as well as his two nephews, John and Joseph Vareka; and brother-in-law Michael Yacobi.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Pote-Graham of Fort Myers, FL; Mother-in-law, Lorraine Zwolinski-Pote of IL; four sister-in-laws, Cathie (Warren) Hanson of KY; Pat Yacobi of Jacksonville, FL; Theresa Pote of Fort Myers, FL; and Karol (Jeff) Mayoros of Iowa; Wisconsin nieces/nephews, Jim (Barb) Vareka of WI, Anne Vareka of MN, Jean Vareka of WI, Carolyn (Jim) Lowery of WI, and Bill Vareka (Sue) of WI; as well as additional nieces & nephews plus extended family members and friends.
He was a quiet man with a beautiful smile. We will all miss him.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Friday, October 20, 2023 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 12171 Iona Road, Fort Myers, FL. Following the Mass, he will be laid to rest in the Church Memorial Garden.
