James "Jim" Edward Painter's Obituary
James "Jim" Edward Painter, born in Batesville, Arkansas, on September 28, 1940, passed away peacefully in Fort Myers, Florida, on January 14, 2026.
A man of duty and conviction, Jim dedicated over 20 years of honorable service to the U.S. Navy. Following his military career and subsequent professional life, Jim chose Fort Myers, Florida, as the place to enjoy his retirement. He lived there for more than 20 years, becoming a familiar part of the community until his passing.
Jim was a loving father to Dr. Steven Harrelson of Dripping Springs, TX; Pamla Painter Ballard of Virginia Beach, VA; Kemberly Painter Smith of Sherwood, AR; Tamara Joy Painter of Ferndale, AR; Jonathan Painter of Fredericksburg, VA; Laura Painter of Fredericksburg, VA and Sydney Gruzska of King George, VA. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren, who will forever carry him in their hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Meda Painter of Batesville, AR. and four siblings. Jim is survived by his brother Owen "Butch" Painter of Eagle Lake, MN.
Jim is predeceased by his first wife Maria Harrelson Painter, mother to four of his children. Jim subsequently married Sharon Hill Painter and became father to three additional children. After moving to Florida, Jim met Phyliss Stark and his partner and love of many years until his passing. The family wants to give special thanks to his dear friend Peter Towle, who showed devotion and unwavering friendship to Jim in the last months of his life.
His family will remember him for his enduring strength and the pride he took in his children and grandchildren. Jim was a cherished mentor and friend who offered kindness, generosity, and friendship to all who had the privilege to know him and devoted to AA and serving others for over 50 years throughout his own sobriety.
Jim will be laid to rest with honors at Sarasota National Cemetery. Service dates will be announced later.
