James McLane Trotter's Obituary
In Memoriam: James McLane Trotter
James McLane Trotter, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, peacefully passed away in the early hours of December 11, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones in Fort Myers, FL. Born on July 29, 1930, in Nashville, TN, to Joseph John and Martha Edwards Trotter, Jim's life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and love.
Jim was preceded in death by his brother, William Paul Trotter, and sister, Margaret Trotter Clouse. He is survived by his devoted wife of more than 68 years, Bernadette Locke Trotter; his daughter Deborah Crep, and husband Tom of Ft. Myers; his son James Trotter and wife Kim of Tampa. Jim’s legacy lives on through his granddaughter, Ashleigh Marsh and husband Brent and their eight-month-old son Landon Ryan; and four grandsons: Tyler, Matthew, and James Hunter Trotter, and Conor Crep.
From an early age, Jim faced the challenges of the Great Depression, losing his father at the tender age of four. The Navy became his refuge at the age of 17 in October 1947, offering him the opportunity to see the world and provide stability in his life. Jim served his country with honor in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring in 1967 as a Chief Quartermaster. Throughout his life, Jim maintained a deep connection with his fellow Navy comrades and attended annual reunions.
Post-Navy, Jim captained a tour boat in Honolulu, where he passionately narrated and reenacted the events of December 7, 1941, for visitors. His final career chapter began in New Orleans, where he became an expert in the offshore oil and diving industry. From Taylor Diving and Salvage to international consulting roles throughout Europe and the Middle East, and in countries such as New Zealand, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, and Canada. Jim's leadership, care, and knowledge left lasting mark on colleagues worldwide.
Jim's career allowed him and Bernadette to travel extensively, sharing unique experiences that enriched their lives. Even at the age of 80, Jim retired reluctantly, missing the challenges and camaraderie of his work.
To Jim's family, he was more than a diver; he was a wonderful husband, father, grandparent, provider, and one heck of a storyteller. He stood as a pillar of strength, embodying silent faith, devotion to family, and unwavering commitment to his country. He enjoyed the Cardinals and the Cowboys, had a passion for good music and watching golf, but above all, loved his family deeply.
In remembrance of Jim Trotter, may his legacy of resilience in overcoming adversity, love, and hard work inspire generations to come.
