Her most avid follower was her husband of 46 years, Ken.A voracious reader, Jean was a frequent visitor to the North and Fort Myers libraries. She proudly wore a hat saying “I cannot live without books”. She now has unlimited reading. Jean was proudly born and raised in Fort Myers and let northern transplants, especially her husband, know it.Jean loved St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She went to grade school there and was in the first graduating class from Bishop Verot High School where she was class valedictorian, Homecoming Queen, Honor Society member and Cheerleader. After graduation she graduated from Tampa Business School and went to work at Pavese, Shields Law Firm where she rose to office manager. She married Ken in 1971 and moved to Foxboro, MA and then Mayport, FL as Ken was in the Navy. The children began arriving in 1974 and Jean became a stay at home mom to better raise them, and an awesome job she did. Thankfully she got a job transcribing court transcripts with John Martina Court Reporter working from home. She continued working until the end. Jean and Ken met in 1968 at Father Anglim’s CYO Youth Group. Jean said she might not have married Ken if not for his letters from overseas, as Ken did not know how to talk to women face to face. They fell in love and remained that way.If there was something that needed doing, Jean did or got it done. St. Francis needed help raising money for the CFA so with Ft. Michael McMullen’s permission, she organized and started St. Francis Friday Bingo and 5 dollar dinners. St. Francis has met its goal ever since. Jean was a Eucharistic Minister, money counter, ran the church store and ministered to the homebound. She ran the kitchen at Bingo and oversaw many dinners and receptions where she contributed many favorite recipes for her followers. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Cecilia Hastings; her infant brother, Nickolas; son, Karl; many aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her husband Ken, brother, Richard (Linda) Hastings, uncle Tom (Kathleen) Kelly, Aunt Patricia (Steven) Nott, many cousins, and her amazing children, Aaron Schneider, Elyse (Jarrod) Curtis, Allison (Marco) Gray, Valerie (Ryan) Nolan, Conrad (Alexis) and six beloved grandchildren James, Adam, Isabel, Jacob, Everly and Adelyn.Jean will be missed by her many friends whom she dearly loved. Her family extends gratitude to the doctors and staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for their kindness and professionalism during Jean’s last days/Condolences may be left to Jean’s family at www.fortmyersmemorial.com.
