John A Farthing's Obituary
John A. Farthing 85, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2020. He was a fighter all his life and fought until the very end when he succumbed to Leukemia and other health issues. John was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Marie Farthing, brother Walter Farthing and sister Betty Potter. He is survived by many nephews and nieces, brother in law, Charles Potter, many great nephews and nieces and great great nephews and nieces.
John was born in Akron, Ohio and grew up in Tallmadge, OH. The family moved to Fort Myers FL in 1968. He was born in a time where opportunities were limited for handicapped individuals. He did his best to keep up with other kids and enjoyed attending the Rotary Camp in Portage Lakes, OH. He graduated from Tallmadge High School and opened and operated a Snack Shop outside Goodyear Plant 2. He later owned a laundromat in Akron. He took correspondence courses and learned how to repair tv's, radios and lawnmowers which he worked on after moving to FL.
He enjoyed going to drive in movies and stock car races with his nephews and going miniature golfing and pistol shooting. Along with longtime friend, Wes Betlyon and others they started the first handicapped bowling league at the Coliseum Bowling Alley in Springfield Township, OH. Later in FL he enjoyed playing Shuffleboard and computer games.
He was a smart man and very observant, a great listener and had a good sense of humor. He was a super Uncle to Ron, Jim, Tom, Jeanne, Lori, Jeff, Becky, Johnny and Danny who will all miss him.
