John "Jack" Thomas McDermott's Obituary
John “Jack” Thomas McDermott 73, of Fort Myers passed unexpectedly on December 4, 2023, at home with his loving wife, Ruth Ann, by his side. He was born on December 11, 1949, in Johnstown, Penn., to Paul and Doris (Mitchell) McDermott. Jack and Ruth Ann have called Florida their home for 12 years.
Jack was a devoted Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, serving his country with honor and distinction.
Jack’s military career spanned nearly 30 years, during which he demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to his country. He was a true patriot who always put the needs of his country and his fellow citizens first. Jack’s service to his country was recognized with numerous awards and commendations, including the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Air Force Training Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Humanitarian Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Badge, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, NCO Professional Education Ribbon, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award. During his time in service, he graduated from the Squadron Officers School and the Air Command and Staff College.
Other than his devotion to serving his country, Jack loved golfing, gardening, cooking and his two dogs, Bo and Sydney.
Jack was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Jack is preceded in passing by his parents, Paul and Dorris McDermott and his brother, David McDermott.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Ann; his children, John Scott (Stephanie) McDermott and Kevin (Chasity) McDermott; his sister, Maureen (David) Noyes; his brother Paul (Penny) McDermott; his sisters-in-law, Jayne (Tommy) Watkins, Barbara (Keith) Wilson and Deborah (Margo) Ortega; his two grandchildren and his beloved dogs, Bo and Sydney.
Jack's memorial service will be held at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens on Thursday, December 14, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a no-kill animal shelter.
