Kermit Meredith Jewell's Obituary
Kermit M. Jewell, age 94, a longtime resident of Fort Myers, Florida passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014.He was born on the 4th of July, 1919 to Herbert and Lena (Miles) Jewell in Shawsville, Virginia where his family owned and operated the local lumber mill. He graduated from Shawsville High School and attended Concord College in West Virginia before entering the Army’s 36th Engineers as a Combat Unit Commander. From 1943 to 1946, he served in the following battles and campaigns; Central Europe, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France and Rhineland. He was awarded the American Service Medal, EAME Campaign Ribbon with Five Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Arrowhead, Purple Heart and the Victory Medal. Kermit came to Fort Myers in 1962 to work on the Caloosahatchee Bridge. He then worked for Gulf American Land Corporation in the development of Cape Coral. He was an avid golfer and fisherman.Kermit was preceded in death by his beloved wife Susie (Rudisill) Jewell and his brother Jackson (Margret) Jewell. He is survived by sisters Etta Mae (Carl) Tarpley, Phyllis Underwood, his loving daughter Sue Jewell Tracy and granddaughters Megan Hochheimer (Nooie), Erin Dohrman (T. Hampton) and two great grandchildren Dylan and Dalton and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.A Memorial Service will be conducted on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida 33907, (239) 936-0555.
