Larry, myself and a group of others met and worked for a common purpose, to make Cape Coral a better place to live. I guess you could say our main goal was to make Cape Coral more resident friendly. We could always count on Larry if we needed some research, guidance or solid advice.
From what I can gather this was just one of many causes in which Larry became actively engaged. It was an absolute pleasure to work with him. When I first started to work in the group it felt as though I had known Larry for years. That’s just how he was. He was a real team player and always kept his eye on the ball, yet he could always laugh and you could see a certain sparkle in his eye when something “hit home”.
I will always be grateful for his help, his good judgement and especially for his friendship. I always will remember Larry and I send condolences to Phyllis and his family. I know Larry will be missed.

I met and befriend Larry Barton a little over 40 years ago. We were business partners. Unbeknown to most, Larry was a Pioneer in may areas. He was the Co-Founder of Southwest Bronx Community Coordinating Council, a small community economic development non-profit in the Bronx. It later spawned one of New York State's
first Neighborhood Preservation Companies in the late 70's, called East-West Eviction Preservation.

Through Larry’s leadership on the Board..it was a great board too...East-West set up the first help desk inside the housing courts in the Bronx, NY helping Pro Se tenants. He was later one of four co-founders of the City-Wide Task Force
on the Housing Courts. In the early 80's, utilizing one of IBM’s 2nd generation PC called the AT, he co-hosted one of the second online bulletin boards in the country for Black people called NABCON (The National Black Communication Network). This was at a time when modems ran at 300, 1200, and 2400 bauds!

He co-founded and pioneered the 1st online service computer conferencing service called
Sphinx Communication Group run and operated entirely by a Black company, for over 15years. In conjunction with Medical Computer Systems Planning (now called MCSP.com), Larry help negotiate the terms and Sphinx launched
one of the 1st online broadband service in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn NY! Owned by two Black men! Through these online services, Larry pioneered the bridging of the digital divide, providing free internet services to national and local churches and professional organizations of color…back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Also, through Sphinx,
Larry hosted the first online electronic medical magazine called Reproductive Sciences, and later formed a joint venture company called Sphinx Internet Services...all before the WEB. I will not inundate you with all of his “simultaneous” community economic development accomplishments while working with the Black United Fund of NY,
while on loan from IBM. Larry was a number-two-in-the-background-man, that everyone knew that he was number 1! No matter what "number" you were he provided the Stability needed for progreaa.

None of Larry’s accomplishments would have been possible with God, his beloved son……and his most beloved wife! Thank you so much Phyllis. She was there when all this went down…but that my friends, is yet another inspiring story of Love, Courage, Support, and Perseverance. Sanyakhu’

I will always remember how Larry used to take me to the doctors or to the store he would never complain he sit there and wait till .I was finish. We would exchange recipes for sweet potato pies he would send one over it was good.I will always appreciate what he did for me he will be missed RIP

Remembering Larry...

Let me tell you about the Larry I knew - the Cape Coral Larry - the white bearded Larry...

I first met Larry when he and Phyllis moved down the street from Janet & I in Cape Coral. We all became quick friends. I remember his many stories especially those about his group of Healey aficionados and their road trips, but most of all I will remember working with Larry on civic issues - creating and delivering flyers, speaking at city council meetings on government issues, and researching the many problems in the Cape and then creating solutions.

The Larry I will remember was the Larry who was always ready to laugh and be of good humor and cheer.

The Larry I will remember was the Larry who was always willing to work against inequity, malfeasance, and the high cost of government and to champion transparency.

The Larry I will remember was the Larry who always laughed when I would play Mareiale Mathieu singing "La Marsillaine" when I called him. He would draw inspiration from the tune as well as the lyrics and would respond with "Marchens, Marchens!"

Well, Larry - I know you are up there now so..."Marchens, Marchens"!

Larry was a thoughtful and caring person. He was a friend. In spite of his illnesses, whenever he talked to me, he always inquired about my health. My concerns came before his. I still hear in my heart and in my head, " Hi Shirl, (no one ever called me Shirl other than my brothers. I guess he was a brother from another mother), how are you today? How are you feeling?" I still hear his voice in my head and in my heart. I love him and miss him.

My thoughts and memories of Larry Barton

Larry was my cousin, we grew up living next door to each other. His mother and my mother were sisters. Larry was older and a
very good example of taking advantage of
higher education. He was always studying
and learning. Always taking another college
course. I remember when he started working
for IBM, we were so proud of him. Sometimes he would tell us about the places
he traveled for the company, it seemed so
exciting. Over the years I have read of his
achievements and successes and I am not
surprised at his many accomplishments.
Years went by and we didn't really keep in
touch. He and Phyllis moved to Florida and
there would be a random call. However when
my mother passed away Larry came for her
service. We were surprised and glad to see
him. When our Uncle Luke passed away he
was there also. Still we didn't keep in touch
to often.
Several years ago we started to communicate
a little more often. I called it our check in talks. We would call one another, catch up on
life events, share a private joke, laugh and
smile until the next time. This went on until
last month when our check in chats stopped.
I will miss our chats, our private jokes, and
his slow laughter. I will truly miss him.
May you be at rest. May you be at peace.

Larry was an extraordinary person whom I feel fortunate to have been able to call my friend.

We met as neighbors in Florida drawn together in a common cause which we both felt was an injustice to the community. Our common interests and friendship grew from there. We became involved with a small group of other like minded people who also became friends.

Among our group Larry was always considered an intellect, great researcher, voice of reason and trusted friend to all. I had a great respect and admiration for Larry’s calm, objective and thoughtful manner. On several occasions the group asked Larry and I to work together as a team contacting, meeting with and communicating the group’s thoughts with local officials. I believe others in the group recognized Larry and I worked well together, shared a mutual respect and could communicate comfortably with officials without conflict. Our interactions in those situations were always civil, dignified and professional. Occasionally we even got results.

Our friendship grew from those times and never ended. I miss my friend Larry dearly.

One of the best things my sister did, was to meet, chase and marry Larry. Whenever I bought him a birthday card I would never have to write “in-law” onto the card. He was my brother. Once he and Phyllis moved to Florida, I became extremely close to Larry. He gave me advice,talked to me about politics, laughed at my silly jokes, helped me solve glitches on my computer, and most importantly was a great son-in-law to my mother. During the time of my mother’s illness, it was the support from Larry that allowed me to continue to work. He was there every day to make sure her needs were being met during my absence.

A man of integrity was Larry. He was my pseudo-tax consultant. If there ever was a question on whether I could deduct an item or not, I would seek out his advice because of his honesty; you would never you find a more truthful person, He never would speak a ill word about another person, unless that person was a politician or a basketball who fumbled on the court.

Although I miss him immensely, I smile when I think of all of them together again. His parents, my parents and my nephew, all together in the presence of Our Lord. Rest in peace my brother.
