Lawrence E. Jewell's Obituary
Lawrence E. Jewell, 81, of Lexington, Kentucky peacefully passed away on Tuesday at his home in Fort Myers, Florida. Larry was born September 23, 1936 in Pineville, Kentucky, the son of the late Mattie Gourley and James Madison Jewell.He graduated from Pineville High School, where he was co-captain of the undefeated 1953 SEKC Champion Mountain Lion football team and where he met his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth “Tan” Neel Jewell. Larry attended the University of Kentucky where he was a member of Triangle Fraternity. He went on to become a Civil Engineer (P.E.). Larry served in the United States Army in Japan as a surveyor and maps specialist where he and Tan enjoyed many adventures and his son Michael Kevin Jewell was born. Upon their return to the U.S., they lived briefly in Berea where their daughter Jane Jewell Lowe was born before the family moved to Lexington. Larry worked for the Kentucky Department of Transportation for more than 30 years and retired as Assistant Director of Construction in 1997. He was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church.Larry is survived by his wife Elizabeth “Tan” Jewell; his son Michael Kevin “Mike” Jewell (wife Cindy); his daughter Jane Jewell Lowe (husband Tim); and 4 grandchildren, Matthew, Luke and Sarah Grace Jewell, and Tucker “TJ” Lowe.Visitation will be held August 4, 2018 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM with a Memorial Service immediately following at Clark Legacy Center, 601 E Brannon Rd, Nicholasville, KY 40356.In lieu of flowers the family requests that gifts in Larry’s memory be given to Centenary United Methodist Church, 2800 Tates Creek Rd, Lexington, KY 40502 or Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908 or online at https://donate.hopehcs.org/.Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33907, 239-936-0555.
