I would also like to offer my condolences to the family of Mrs. Hitchcock. I have fond memories of her as my teacher. Being a teacher in a one room school could not have been an easy venture but she persevered for some years in that role. As Susan Frye mentioned she and I were students of hers in 1957, but I had the good fortune to have been with her for kindergarten also in 1956 when eight grades were still together in one room. There were just two of us in kindergarten. She was a kind lady. I recall my Mom receiving a birthday card from her on my mom’s 95th birthday about 8 years ago although my mom had not seen her in decades. To Mrs. Hitchcock's Family: Even though I'm almost 70, she'll always be Mrs. Hitchcock to me. It's lovely to read what Marilyn and Ila Jean have written. Doris Rock and I had Mrs. Hitchcock in first grade in 1957. I was always happy there and still I can see her face, the room, and the school yard. It is a tribute to her that these memories are alive 64 years later. I too will send a memorial gift. Sincerely, Susan Frye, Maysville Iowa.

I send my condolences on the death of my friend Lois to all in her family. Lois was a year behind me in high school, but we saw a lot of each other because we were both in the Normal Training classes which prepared you to teach in the one-room schools in Iowa.
We knew each other later as we saw each other after we were married and met on many occasions, even after we had both retired.
Then, I had another connection with the family because I did quite a lot of subbing while my family was young, before I went back to full-time teaching. I taught at East Linn Grove the first year out of high school and then I finished out a year in the early 1960s at East Linn Grove School , but the teacher who had back surgery was Lois's sister Phyllis .
Lois was always a good friend, I know a good teacher , and we had a lot of good visits over the years.
I will be sending a donation to the Alan Shepard School in her memory.
I read with interest the condolence from Ila Rock listed before mine, because I had her brother Dick in first grade the 1946-47year when I taught at East Linn Grove School.

Some of my siblings are I were probably some of your mom/grandmother's first students. East Linn Grove was the nearest one-room country school to our farm. For some of those years I was the only student in my grade. I only had two teachers, one being Mrs. Hitchcock, before the North Scott schools were consolidated. That might have been 1958. I don't know how she taught those eight grades in that one room, but we were all in it together. My siblings and I have good memories of East Linn Grove and your mom. We liked having her for a teacher!! I'm sure there are hundreds of other people who would say the same thing. I taught for 35 years, mostly in WI, and I had a lot of good teachers who probably influenced my decision to teach. Ila Jean Rock
