Lois L Smith's Obituary
Lois S. Smith, 97, of Shell Point, FL, entered Heaven on Sunday, October 23, 2022, after a long and wonderful life. She departed peacefully at the Shell Point Larsen Health Center, Fort Myers, FL.
Lois was born in McBain, MI, on October 6, 1925, to Ethel and Orville Scott. Lois was a graduate of a nursing school in Michigan. She married Denton, the love of her life, on February 8, 1945. Denton and Lois moved initially to the Washington, DC, area and then moved to Simsbury, CT. Lois was an active participant in construction of the family homes in both areas and pursued her medical career as a OBGYN nurse and one of the pioneer nurse practitioners. After retiring, Denton and Lois first moved to Keowee Key, SC. Desiring a year-round opportunity to continue fine tuning their golf skills, they retreated further south to Florida. They took on an active role in the Shell Point community in 2000 as two of the earliest residents in Oakmont.
Denton and Lois took adventure trips to all seven continents, enjoying an African safari, whitewater rafting in Costa Rico, hiking in Galapagos, seeing penguins in the Antarctic, exploring the Great Wall of China and more.
During her time at Shell Point, Lois was a Charter Member of the Shell Point Golf Club, and proudly displayed trophies for her multiple holes-in-one on the course. She was an active member of Fort Myers Congregational UCC Church.
Lois’ beloved husband of 66 years, Denton, died in 2011. Her siblings, Ray, Erma, and Mildred, predeceased her. She is survived by her two children, Gary Smith (Valerie) of Essex Junction, VT, and Luayne Smith Crandall (Derrick) of McLean, VA. She was especially close to her five grandchildren: Scott Smith (April) of Annandale, VA; Brian Smith (Amanda) of Bexley, Ohio; Sherry McKinney (Tucker) of Chapel Hill, NC; Alysson Lehman (Robert) of Oakton, VA; and Carolyn Holman (Joshua) of Richmond, VA.
In addition, Lois had a special love for her eleven great grandchildren: Anna and Benjamin Smith; Sophia and Theo Smith; Toby and Cora McKinney; Avery, Tyler, and Robbie Lehman; and Emma and William Holman.
Celebrations of Lois' life are planned for future dates at the Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ in Fort Myers FL, as well as at a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers the family requests consideration of a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601, www.alz.org.
