Mary Margaret Benak's Obituary
Mary Margaret Benak (Stauffer), age 79, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, in Fort Myers. Born on January 25, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose life was marked by love, generosity, and quiet strength.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Frank G. Benak. Together, they shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and family devotion. She was the proud mother of John, Jim (Lindsey Candey), and Brian (Erin), and the adored grandmother of Nick and Grace, James “LJ” and Reese, and Leah and Drew. Mary is also survived by her sister, Ann Stauffer, her sister-in-law Rose Benak-Robinson (Issac Baumfeld), and many cherished nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and John Stauffer.
A graduate of Trinity High School, Mary contributed her time and talents to the family business, Benak Shell Service Station, where she managed the accounting operations with care and precision. Her steady hand and thoughtful nature were vital to the success of the business for many years.
Mary enjoyed weekends in Saugatuck, Michigan, for many years creating lifelong friendships. After retirement, Mary and Frank made their home in Fort Myers, Florida, where they became active members of the St. Charles Yacht Club. Mary especially enjoyed playing Mahjong and spending time with friends, family and especially her grandchildren. Her warmth, laughter, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her - including her chocolate chip cookies.
A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and Cemetery on October 29, 2025, at 11 a.m.
