Mary Suzanne Gladis' Obituary
Mary Suzanne Gladis, age 73, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, at Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, Florida, following complications from cancer.
Mary was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in North Aurora, Illinois, the daughter of George and Julia Gladis (Zmina). She grew up surrounded by family and strong values that would guide her throughout her life. She is survived by her siblings, Eileen Sedor (+David) and George Gladis (+Nancy).
A lifelong learner, Mary was a proud graduate of West Aurora High School, earned her Bachelor’s degree from Eureka College, and later completed her Master’s degree at Jones International University. Her professional career was spent at Florida Southwestern State College, where she served in several roles, including Advisor, Financial Aid Specialist, and Veterans and Military Services Specialist. Mary took great pride in helping students, especially veterans, navigate their educational journeys and reach their goals.
Above all else, Mary was a devoted mother and Nana. She is survived by her daughters, Melissa Metzger (Ross) and Jodi Anderson (James), and her beloved grandchildren, Sophia, Aidan, Hannah, and Liam. Being “Nana” was one of her greatest joys, and she lived for her grandchildren, loving them “to the moon and back.” She never missed a birthday or family gathering and was a constant, loving presence in their lives.
Mary found joy in life’s simple pleasures including family dinners, cookie baking with her grandchildren, sewing, watching the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and spending time together whenever possible. She loved traveling, especially cruises and trips to Disney, experiences she cherished even more when shared with family.
Her faith was central to her life. Mary was an active and dedicated member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Myers, where she served as Sunday School Director and volunteered tirelessly at church fundraisers and events. Her passion, kindness, and giving spirit were evident to all who knew her, and her devotion to her church community will be remembered by many.
Mary faced her illness with bravery and determination, fighting hard through every chapter. She was strong in spirit and surrounded by love until the end. Those who knew her will remember how deeply she loved, how freely she gave, and how she made everyone around her feel truly cared for.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 8210 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, Florida 33919.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church or Moffitt Cancer Hospital.
Mary’s legacy lives on in her family, her faith, and the countless lives she touched with her compassion and love.
