Maurice Merle Stevens' Obituary
Maurice Merle Stevens, age 93, died on July 21, 2013, in Cape Coral, FL. Maurice was born March 29, 1920, south of Colome, South Dakota to Carl and Ida Mae Stevens. He grew up in the Mitchell, South Dakota area and graduated from Mitchell High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Doris Anderson. They were married August 27, 1939. They were blessed with three children: Marilyn, Janice and Daniel. Maurice enlisted in the Army Air Force in August 1942. During World War II, he was a B-24 bomber pilot and flew 37 missions in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in September of 1945. After returning home from the service, he developed land and owned several retail businesses in the Mitchell, South Dakota area. In 1977, the couple moved to Florida, where he and their son, Dan, developed land and built a tropical palm nursery. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 74 years, Doris; his children: Marilyn (Olin) Odland of Sioux Falls, SD, Jan Stevens of Spanish Fort, AL and Dan (Mary Kaye) Stevens of St. James City, FL; his grandchildren: Tim (Marcia) Odland, Steve (Marcy) Odland, Rick (Amy) Odland, Karisa (Scott) Workman and Craig (Staci) Stevens and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters, a son and a grandson. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with entombment to follow in Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends will be received from noon until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be given to Pine Island United Methodist Church, Backpack Ministry, 5701 Pine Island Rd, Bokeelia, FL 33922 or to Hope Hospice of Lee County, 2430 Diplomat Parkway, Cape Coral, FL 33909.
