Maynard Howard Ackley, 93, passed away December 26, 2010.?áHe was born September 13, 1917 in Newago, Michigan to the late Thammer and Sadie (Walton) Ackley. ?áHe came to Lee County in 1976 from Portage, Indiana. ?áHe is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Billie; sisters Mable Gloson, Louis Green and Hazel Ackley. He is survived by his son Roger Ackley of Ocala, Florida; daughter-in-law, Mary Ackley of Ocala; brothers, Bill Ackley of Goshen, Indiana and Carol Ackley of Portage, Indiana; sisters, Jean North of Albany, Oregon and Beth Wagoner of Michigan; grandchildren, Christopher and his wife Laurel Ackley of Tampa, Florida and Jill and her husband Michael Hogan of Birmingham, Alabama; great-grandaughter, Barrett Hogan of Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Ackley was a graduate of Edison High School in East Gary, Indiana.?áHe served as a Sergeant in the US Army during WWII in Normandy, Rhineland, France.?áHe received 4 bronze stars, the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.?áHe then owned and operated Contact Auto for 35 years in Portage, Indiana. There will be a visitation on Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.?áFuneral service will be at 1:30 followed by interment with Military Honors.
