Nicholas Jason Sterling Jr's Obituary
Nicholas Jason Sterling, Jr., 89, of Cape Coral, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024. He was born in Cooperstown, New York on November 7, 1934 to Nicholas J. and Christine Sterling He is survived by his wife Xenia (Mickey) of 62 years and their three children; Larissa Sterling, Alexandra Hellenbrand and her husband Jack, and Christopher Sterling and his wife Meghan, along with six grandchildren.
He has called Florida his home since 2000. Previously, he had lived in; Binghamton, New York; Blowing Rock, North Carolina; and Pine lsland, Florida; then he moved permanently to Cape Coral.
His educational career included C2 BA from Williams College; an MS and PhD from Syracuse University in Mathematics. He taught at the Millbrook School for Boys, in Millbrook,New York; in the Jamesville-Dewitt School System, DeWitt, New York; and Webster College, Webster Groves, Missouri. In 1966, he became assistent professor at SUNY-B (now Binghamton University). In three years, he became associate professor with tenure and continued teaching for the university for 32 years. Twelve of those years, he was Master of Hinman College which was an integral part of the university. He served on multiple committees, helping to make changes to the university. Above all, he loved teaching: teaching students ranging from the elementary level through high school; college students, graduate students including teachers. He had been a part of CSMP ( Comprehensive School Program ) for 15 years, a program which developed a mathematics cirriculum for students K-12.
He retired in June of 1998 and moved south. This enabled Nick and his wife to enjoy boating, fishing, gardening; in addition to frequent international travels, ski trips to Colorado and trips to visit family in California and North Carolina. Above all, Nick enjoyed the outdoors and its' sports. He was an avid skier and hiker.
