Owen Smith's Obituary
Owen Smith, 73, of Fort Myers Florida – The man. The myth. The legend.
Owen passed away peacefully at his home on March 19, 2026, surrounded by his family, the ones who cared for him and stood faithfully by his side. Born on June 18, 1952, in Michigan to Samuel and Jean Smith, Owen was a man defined by strength, humor and a deep love for life. He carried a spirit of independence and adventure that guided him in all that he did. He built a proud career as an Operating Engineer, beginning in1973 and retired in 2009. A dedicated member of Local 324 Operating Engineers for 53 years, Owen took great pride in his work. Owen lived for the freedom of the open road. His Harley was more than a motorcycle-it was part of who he was. From everyday rides, bike weeks, trips to Key West and even tornado chasing, (yes, he spent a month chasing tornadoes) he embraced life with a fearless sense of adventure and a constant smile. Above all, Owen was a proud father and grandfather. His greatest joys were his son Sam (Sammy) and grandsons, Owen and Tristan. He loved watching them play sports, cheering them on with pride, and spending time together fixing trucks or building anything they set their minds to. Those moments meant everything to him. He will be deeply missed by his son – Sam; Sam’s partner Kate; his beloved grandsons, Owen and Tristan; his companion Debbie; his siblings; and many nephews, nieces, extended family members and close friends.
Owen is reunited in heaven with his parents and other cherished loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, laughter, and living life on his own terms-free, full and without regret. His spirit will forever ride on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. With the wind at his back and a smile on his face, he lived a life most only dream of.
