Paul was an excellent engineer and an extremely proficient IT guy. I was fortunate enough to be able to employ him as Chief Engineer of our group of stations in Punta Gorda, first under InterMart Broadcasting, and later under the Clear Channel umbrella of stations. He was responsible for all technical aspects of the launch of KIX Country 92.9 (WIKX-FM), the launch of Seaview 104.9 (WCVU-FM) and the launch of Beach 98.9 (WBCG-FM). All totalled, we had a five-station cluster, including two AM stations (WCCF and WKII) with Paul handling all engineering duties and a good share of IT duties from the early '90s through my departure in 2009.
As the father of three young sons, he would often ask if it was OK to bring Jeff, Tim and Chris along when he was called in for some emergency situation on very short notice. After more than one such incident, I convinced him that his boys were always welcome, and he didn't have to ask my permission to bring them along each time. They became regular visitors to the stations, often after hours or when engineering projects were relegated to the weekends, and I always admired his dedication to his boys.
I always had a minimum of three phone number for Paul, including his home phone and multiple cell phones. When Hurricane Charley blasted Punta Gorda and left our Deltona studios in Punta Gorda crippled, he gave me his AT&T cell phone because my Verizon phone had ceased to work the day after the storm when their generators ran out of fuel and went of line. That single phone served as our life line for several days as we used it to take calls on KIX Country until the other cell providers were able to bring in auxiliary facilities to restore service.
He was a lover of fast cars, and was always tinkering to get more horsepower out of whatever he was driving. I marveled at his proficiency in Spanish, which he taught himself because he had several Hispanic stations as engineering clients. And he REALLY loved the holidays, so much so that he often left his Christmas tree up well beyond the season.
I had lost touch with Paul in recent years and was saddened to hear from Robin, the boys mother, that he had passed. RIP, Paul--you were a godsend to our radio group in Punta Gorda and will be missed by all who knew you. Enjoy the lights on your Christmas tree in Heaven--may they burn bright forever!
Your friend,
Mike Moody
